Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

CARBON REDUCTION
We are committed to offering low-impact holidays, which benefit the countries and communities we visit, as well as our travellers and the natural environment. We believe in the transformative power of travel and aim to minimise our ecological footprint by selecting eco-friendly accommodations, encouraging waste reduction, and supporting sustainable transportation options where possible.

This walking tour of Orkney and Shetland offers a low-impact, environmentally conscious way to explore two of Scotland’s most unique island landscapes. Travelling largely on foot, with accommodation based in the walkable harbour towns of Stromness and Lerwick, the holiday encourages slow travel and reduces reliance on private vehicles. Public transport and ferries are used wherever possible to access walking routes and neighbouring islands, helping to minimise the tour’s carbon footprint while allowing a deeper connection with the coastline, wildlife and local communities.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
We operate a ‘leave no trace’ policy in national parks, archaeological sites, monuments, and other sensitive areas like beaches and coastlines; these should be treated with the ultimate respect to maintain them for future generations. Our tour leaders are trained to promote this message to our customers during the holiday.

By exploring these fragile coastal environments responsibly and at a slower pace, this moderate walking tour promotes sustainable tourism while helping to preserve the natural beauty, wildlife habitats, and cultural heritage of Orkney and Shetland.

LOCAL ECONOMY
We provide ample opportunities to explore the local area on foot, where you can shop for local wares and crafts and immerse yourselves in the destination's rich cultural heritage. To enhance your experience, your tour leader will be joined by a knowledgeable, well-qualified local guide for the duration of the trip.

Visits to lesser-visited islands, villages, and heritage sites on this tour help support local economies beyond Scotland’s main tourist destinations, benefiting small businesses, cafés, accommodation providers, and ferry services.

The Ferry Inn in Stromness actively supports the local economy by sourcing much of its food and drink from Orkney producers, including local fisheries, farms, bakeries, and breweries, reducing food miles while supporting island businesses and sustainable local supply chains. The hotel also offers vegetarian and vegan meal options for guests.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY & DIVERSITY
We are committed to responsible and sustainable travel practices that support both the local environment and surrounding communities. By selecting environmentally conscious accommodation, encouraging reduced waste, and prioritising sustainable transport where possible, we aim to minimise our footprint. Through respectful engagement and conscious travel choices, we strive to protect natural landscapes while delivering enriching and memorable experiences.
