CARBON REDUCTIONThis itinerary avoids internal flights entirely, moving guests between Quito, Mindo, and Cotopaxi exclusively by private ground transportation along the Avenue of the Volcanoes, reducing the carbon footprint associated with domestic air travel within Ecuador.
Human-powered exploration is built into several days of the program. The full-day Quito city tour is conducted on foot through the historic colonial center, visiting the cathedral, La Compañía, and San Francisco. In Mindo, guests can choose a hiking route along the cloud forest's waterfalls, and in Cotopaxi National Park, guests may hike to observe birds and the surrounding páramo landscape rather than relying on vehicle-based sightseeing.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
The itinerary includes a full day inside Cotopaxi National Park, one of Ecuador's most important protected areas, home to the highest active volcano in the world. Guests pay the park's entrance fee, which supports the park's ongoing conservation and management. Within the park, guests may observe endemic flora and fauna, including the Chuquiragua flower, wild horses, deer, and llamas, as well as visit Limpiopungo Lagoon, home to native bird species.
In Mindo, one of Ecuador's most biodiverse cloud forests, guests can visit the Orchid Garden and Butterfly Farm, small conservation-oriented enterprises dedicated to protecting and breeding native orchid and butterfly species, and walk the Waterfall Route through the forest itself.
Throughout the trip, travelers are guided to observe wildlife respectfully and without disturbance and are reminded to respect local customs and natural surroundings rather than intervene with plants or animals encountered along the way.

LOCAL ECONOMYThe Quito city tour includes stops where guests can browse and purchase crafts from different local artisans near the historic San Francisco church and plaza, supporting small-scale, independent producers within the colonial center.
The Mindo Chocolate Route connects guests directly with small, regional chocolate producers, supporting the local cacao economy through tastings and direct purchases.
The included day at leisure gives guests time to explore local markets, museums, and a range of Ecuadorian food experiences, from traditional dishes to modern fusion cuisine, allowing tourism spending to reach small, independent local businesses.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY, AND DIVERSITY
The trip is accompanied throughout by a bilingual local guide, who leads the Quito city tour, the Mindo excursion, and the Cotopaxi day, providing consistent local employment and expertise across the itinerary.
The program is rated as Moderate/Medium fitness, involving walking tours and short hikes over occasionally uneven terrain, and travelers are advised in advance so they can assess their own suitability for the trip.
