Description of Morocco holiday, tailor made
This is a great shorter break and a fantastic introduction to Morocco. Marrakesh is one of the most fascinating cities in Africa and for a four hour flight, you will not be able to find yourself anywhere more exotic.
The old ochre walls still encircle the medina, a warren of side streets and souqs. At the heart of the medina lies the Koutoubia Mosque, with its iconic minaret, and the Djema El Fna square, an open space where jugglers, mime artists, actors, story- and fortune-tellers, amateur boxers, acrobats and musicians all compete for attention in a kaleidoscope of colours, sounds and smells. Marrakesh also boasts several wonderful gardens to relax in, not least the Jardin Majorelle, filled with exotic blooms and restored by the late Yves St Laurent.
Marrakesh is a surprisingly short distance from the High Atlas, and after just 30 minutes you begin to climb into the hills before coming to Imlil, the trekking centre of the High Atlas. Just beyond here you abandon the car for the last 100-or-so metres up to the restored tribal castle that is the Kasbah Du Toubkal.
Beyond the Kasbah, the valley winds up towards the foot of Jebel Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa, at 4,167 metres. From the Kasbah you can organise walks out into the hills, varying in difficulty and length, and offering the chance to enjoy the remarkable scenery as well as meet some of the Berber villagers from the area.
Pick when you want to take this tailor made adventure. Late spring – around March to May, and early autumn – around September is the best time of year to travel. The summer can get very hot in Marrakesh, whilst the winter in the High Atlas is cold – although with a bit of snow lying around, the mountains are at their most beautiful in the winter.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
So many things really. We really enjoyed the treks that we did with the local guides (who were great) and one of our best meals in Morroco was with the Berber family (terrific Tagine). The views from the Kasbah bab Ourika were stunning.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
In the Souks do be prepared to say no politely but assertively if you aren’t interested in buying. It would be so easy otherwise to buy something out of politeness.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
The guides while we were in the Atlas said that the employment created by the Kasbah was invaluable. It helped sustain local communities as young people were provided with jobs nearby rather than moving to the cities.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
We both really enjoyed every part of the trip and the guides in both Marrakesh and the Atlas really gave us an insight into Moroccan culture and traditions. We would thoroughly recommend the tour operator who organised the trip.

Sleeping in the Sahara. Scenery. The graciousness of the people.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Very comfortable walking shoes. Check out the plans for guided trips and don't get overbooked. Take time to rest. Layers are the way to go with dress. Nothing
fancy.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I remain concerned about the use of bottled water. Wish there were a way to handle the issue. I remember on my 1968 trip to Mexico we had tablets to put in
local water. Must not have worked since we now drink the bottled stuff. We bought at the cooperatives. We tried to tip wherever we could ...especially
remembering the cleaners.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
It was excellent and well planned. We certainly got a taste of all there was to see. Loved the education of most guides. I have thought about writing the
Princess or the Minister of Tourism to say that the people who work with tourists would get more money if it were possible to get smaller bills. I am happy to
tip $1 or $2 or even $5 for the smallest of services but $10 and $20 make the tips add up too quickly.

As well as using only traditional material and methods in the reconstruction of the Kasbah, all the staff come from the local area and the Kasbah is very active in the local village association, which is funded by the Kasbah's accommodation 5% levy. With the funds the association has purchased, and shipped from the UK, a vehicle to use as an ambulance and has also been able to build a hammam (steam bath) in the village which is used by the surrounding communities.
