Description of Mustang trekking holiday in the Himalaya

Mustang is a recently opened area of Nepal, offering a novel Himalayan hiking experience aided by experienced guides, cook and Sherpa porters. The area is also rich in distinctive history as a former Buddhist Kingdom which drew on an older form of this reflective religion before Lama Nygorchen Kunga Sangpo introduced the Shakya Buddhism tradition now practised here.

Your main walking base in this glorious region is the fabled medieval walled city of Lo Mangthang - 3730m in the 'Roof of the World', and home to the Gelung and Nyingma Monasteries. From here, daily treks fan out to Chusang, Gilling, Gemi, Tasarang, Kagbeni, as well as Jomsom on the Kali Gandaki River.

Travelling with a local operator

This holiday is operated by a company based in the holiday destination and they will be able to provide expert local knowledge. They will be able to tailor make your holiday to suit your requirements not only concerning the dates of travel but also typically the standard of accommodation, and thus price. It is rare for local operators to be able to help with the booking of your flights.

Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Our trekking company is wholly committed to responsible tourism. On our treks & tours, tourism helps improve the standard of living for the local people by generating income for the local community through purchasing of local products such as fresh fruits, handloom products, meat, drinks, and fresh vegetables and providing job opportunities.

We employ well-trained & experienced local guides and hire local porters whose load limit is 20-25kg. On this trek, we stay in campsites in local villages and employ local camping staff.

Our trekking company provides financial donations for the local school (US $2 per visitor) & health post (US $3 per visitor). We provide educational materials for students such as copies, pencils, ball pens and sports equipment (foot balls, basket balls), and provide equipment & medicines for the health post such as tablets, eye drops, high-altitude tablets, plasters and bandages. We also support the Kvresthali Women society with financial donations (US $5 per visitor) which provides education for impoverished adult women and provides funds for goat and vegetables farming and road repair.

On this trip, our guests will have the opportunity to give donations to these causes, and visit the monasteries at Lo-Mangthang to learn Buddhism culture & contribute funds for their continued preservation.

4 out of 5 stars

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The trekking in Mustang was quite magnificent. It is probably the most amazing mountain scenery we have ever experienced. It was also a wonderful experience to stay in the unspoilt Tibetan villages (guesthouses). As a Trekking Fee was paid to the Nepal Government in order to enter this area there were very few other tourists to be seen and we were trekking on our own (with 2 good guide/porters) for most of the days.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

There is no shade at all on this trek. You are exposed to the sun all day, every day. Make sure that you have good head/neck cover. Some sections of the trail were quite hazardous (steep vertical drops, loose stones on very narrow paths etc ). Not for the faint-hearted!! The flights in and out of Jonsom are frequently cancelled at this time of year.

The alternative road journey from Pokhora to Jonsom is long (two days), requires many changes of vehicle (due to landslips over 2 years ago) and is stressful (bad roads, mud etc). Allow spare days in the schedule and clarify the options with the operator. A road is now under construction from Jonsom to Lo Mantang and some sections of the trail now have landrovers and motor bikes to annoy you. The road may make it easier for some Trekkers but may annoy others. Again, please clarify this issue with your operator.

Muktinath (not included in our itinerary) is well worth the visit, and also to help with the initial acclimatisation. We advise Trekkers to include Muktinath in their itinerary (one extra day). We also advise to spent some extra days in the Mustang area and less days in Pokhara and Kathmandu.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The Guesthouses seem to be owned by relations of the King of Mustang. They certainly benefited from the Trekkers. The number of Trekkers was low due to the high cost of the Trekking Pass for this area. I feel that local people were benefited from our trip. Yes, our impact on the environment was minimal.

Sadly, in the future, with the new road, Trekkers may be replaced by Landrover tourists, and in greater numbers. This is a very unspoilt area of the world. It is difficult for this to continue.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This was an outstanding Trek and an overall wonderful experience. We had some very scary moments. We have trekked previously in Nepal and around the world but rate this trek as the best ever. Sadly, this may all change with the new road being built?
