Where is hot in April?

If you want to avoid the crowds and costs of summer, but still get some good weather, then April is an ideal option. But for those of us who want to bask in warm temperatures, it’s good to know where you can expect to find them. We explore some of our favourite April hotspots, with some suggestions on what to do while you’re there.

Where is hot in April?

April is a transitional month in much of the world, falling between rainy seasons, but often hot as well especially in destinations that lie close to the equator. With Easter regularly landing in April, this is a popular month for active family trips that dodge the powerful heat, and the crowds, of summer. And while you can expect to encounter the occasional shower, they’re rarely heavy enough to get in the way of the fun.

Pop on a wide-brimmed hat and slap on some suncream because April’s hot temperatures are ideal for outdoor activities. Wildlife watching can be exceptional – especially for whales in countries from Costa Rica to Sri Lanka to Mexico – while the landscapes are beautiful: thick with wildflowers in some places, and turning delightful shades of rust-red, orange and brown in others.

Costa Rica

April is the hottest month in Costa Rica – temperatures average around 36°C in the daytime. That may leave you as lethargic as a Costa Rican sloth, but if you’re a heat-seeker then April is an ideal month to visit this wildlife-rich country. Thirsty animals gather around riverbanks and diminishing pools, and you can cool off with diving and snorkelling on the coasts. Consider Costa Rica for an Easter getaway with the kids, too. This is a fab destination for families with plenty of thrilling activities, from zip-lining to rainforest treks.

Indonesia

Although it’s a vast country spread across some 17,500 islands, Indonesia actually has quite a predictable climate. April is just on the cusp of peak season – warm but not oppressively hot; showers possible but the rainy season slowing – making it a good month for a range of activities. On islands like Flores and Sumatra the daytime temperatures in April typically hover around the late 20°Cs. Walking, kayaking, snorkelling or just enjoying the beach bum lifestyle all have their place here in April.

Jordan

Given that much of Jordan is made up of desert, the summer months are stiflingly hot. Consider April, then, when the weather is reliably warm and the rains of the preceding months have eased off, leaving beautiful wildflowers cascading over the landscapes. Whether you’re walking or cycling, touring ancient sites or swaying atop a recalcitrant camel, you can expect sunny, dry skies and temperatures suitable for a t-shirt.

Maldives

Only rarely less than idyllic, the Maldives is particularly appealing in April. This is the hottest month of the year – temperatures can be as high as 32°C – and the visibility underwater for divers and snorkellers is sublime. You’ll probably get the odd shower towards the end of the month, but it’s worth it to bask under these sunny skies. Ramadan often falls in April so this can also be an interesting time to visit the Maldives’ Muslim local islands.

Mexico

So warm is the April weather in Mexico – daytime temperatures up to 30°C and little rain – that this is a popular month for cruise ships, and early April also sees crowds of rambunctious American ‘spring breakers’ flocking to the coasts. As such, we recommend heading into the highlands and mountains, where it’s a few degrees cooler but the atmosphere is a lot calmer. You can always finish your trip with a few days on the coast.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka rarely gets cold, though hill country gets chilly, but it does get wet. April, though, with temperatures in the late 20°Cs, falls at the start of the Yala monsoon and just after the Maha monsoon, so any rain you get shouldn’t be too heavy. It won’t take long to dry off anyway, whether hiking, cycling or whale watching off the south coast. As well as being reliably warm, Sri Lanka is also reliably good for families, so if Easter falls in April that makes it a solid bet.

Thailand

The heat is as sticky as the rice in Thailand come April, the hottest month of the year. You’re best off avoiding the sweltering cities at this time and instead making for higher elevations. Jungle treks to tribal communities offer shady routes, or you can look to the coast and the islands. Obviously, everyone else will be thinking similarly, but although the well-known beaches are packed in April, we can always help you find a less busy spot.
