Centre based walking travel guide

CENTRE BASED WALKING HOLIDAYS TRAVEL GUIDE

2 MINUTE SUMMARY

Firstly, as you’re based in one place you can take more luggage – great for those who like to lose the trekking trousers in the evening. Once you’ve settled in you’re free to relax or explore or soak up local life. Staying in one, or maybe two, locations can also be comforting if you feel tired, or are keen to get to know your surroundings a little better. Knowing that you can duck out of a day’s walking is also important if you fancy an alternative activity.

Centre based walking holidays let you set off when you please without the worries – will I reach the next hotel on time? Will my luggage arrive before I do? What will the next place be like? Will I be able to find it? Finally, it’s much more relaxing to just hop in the shower and rest before an evening meal or take your time over breakfast without the hassle of repacking. The pressure’s off; it’s a holiday, after all.

WHAT DO CENTRE BASED WALKING HOLIDAYS ENTAIL?

RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL EXPLAINS

In a nutshell, centre based walking holidays start and finish from the same front door. You could be setting out from a self catering apartment in Andalucia, a count's guesthouse in Transylvania, a shared, family run chalet in the French Alps or a B&B in the Balkans, but from whichever door you set off from, you'll be returning that afternoon or evening for rest, recuperation and to sample a slice of local life.

Aside from this one simple rule, centre based walking holidays can take whatever form you like. They can be tailor made to suit your preferences; they can be self-guided in as much as you have a map, walking route notes and 24hr assistance, if needed – or you can opt for guided walks in the company of an expert who knows the local area like the back of their hand. They may also include a few short transfers to get you to the start of a trail or to the next hotel, guesthouse or B&B. You might opt to share the experience with a small group of likeminded walkers, some of whom may well become part of future walking holiday plans or at least memorable stories to tell on the next trek.
Whichever option you choose, you can be assured that all our centre based walking holidays have been hand-picked to place responsible travellers within some of the world's most captivating countryside. Where trails streak off in all directions like blue veins in a chunk of Gorgonzola and where rest stops showcase sublime settings for picnics, photographs or placing packs upon the grass and watching fluffy clouds scud overhead.

Mountains, lakes, forests or dales; gentle, fair or challenging trails; whichever scene appeals to you, here's advice on what to do…

IS A CENTRE BASED WALKING HOLIDAY FOR YOU?

RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL RECOMMENDS

GO ON A CENTRE BASED WALKING HOLIDAY IF...

… you like a choice of trails. Settling into a rustic guesthouse or lakeside lodge far from city streets opens up a wide range of walking options right from your front door.

… you’re open to suggestions. A tailor made centre based walking holiday lets you build an itinerary around days by the pool, cycling trips or lazy afternoons enjoying the delights of the local vineyard.

… you want to get to know your surroundings. When you're hiking from one location to the next it's tricky to take stock of each location. A centre based walking holiday lets you explore your surroundings in your own time, and in a bit more depth.

… you like to make yourself at home. Returning to base for home cooking and without having to repack is a real plus as is cotching up and tucking into a few treats procured from the local market.

DON’T GO ON A CENTRE BASED WALKING HOLIDAY IF...

… you like to be in the thick of things. Most walkers prefer a base far from the bright lights of towns and cities so bear this in mind if you’re fond of urban options.

… you’re all about the all-inclusive. Half the fun of centre based walking holidays is finding village stores, market days and remote restaurants for yourself – much more exciting than all inclusive hotels.

… you want to really push yourself. Hiking from one location to the next will invariably get you higher, further and deeper into rural landscapes. This isn’t as easy when you’re based in one place.

… you’d put luxury over rustic. The majority of accommodation you'll find on centre based walking holidays is rustic, charming and comfortable; a different kind of indulgence, without going too OTT.
