2 Reviews of Valongo guesthouse near Porto, Portugal
4.5 out of 5 stars
Reviewed on 06 Jun 2018 by Moira Miller
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Just the sheer peace and quiet that meant we could thoroughly relax and do as much or as little as we wanted. The family were lovely, very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Max (the dog) was always around with a happy to see you” greeting. Porto is a vibrant working city with something for everyone.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
When using the train you have to use a ticket machine that is totally in Portuguese. Not everyone speaks English so it was a bit trial and error but we
managed.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes. We used local shops and restaurants. We visited a conservation area to do a walk locally. Used the local transport system which is very good and cheap.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Bliss. Just a shame that the sun was in short supply during our stay.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The guesthouse is a beautiful green oasis of peace away from a very busy city. The rooms and house are furnished to a very high standard and very comfortable. Everything provided, including optional meals, is of a high standard. The owners are very friendly and helpful and communicate well with you before your arrival. The whole day cruise on the Douro was beautiful and really worthwhile- ask their advice about booking this. I asked about a walk to visit part of the Serra de Valongo hills and the owner Clara took myself and two other guests for an 8 km walk starting from their house and going through an area of conservation and natural beauty with steep gorges, forests and streams that we would not have known was there. I only stayed 3 nights but had such a relaxing and interesting experience.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
This was a lovely place to stay just 23 minutes from the historical centre of Porto by local train-the train ( 3 minutes away) takes you straight to Sao Bento station and also stops at Campanha station if you are coming from the airport or
from other cities. It is really easy to get to and from Porto. Porto was very busy - even mid -week in early June- and this give you a very relaxing base. You are in the suburbs but on the edge of the countryside- the countryside is
accessible for walks and you can see the hills rising above the village.
The owners are very helpful in providing information about interesting places to visit, where to eat locally etc. and will help you book activities- just ask for their advice. They sorted out my booking for the Douro cruise for me when there
was a slight problem. They will also provide breakfast (with a very large choice) and a good evening meal or snack on request. ( You will need to pay in cash for accommodation and meals if paying once there). I had an evening flight but
was able to spend the whole of my last day with them which I really appreciated.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
They recycle and produce their own eggs from their chickens. You are able to use local transport and there are walks starting from the guesthouse.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
This exceeded my expectations for a short stay- I will recommend it others and would definitely stay again.
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

In our Guesthouse, nothing is lost, everything is transformed! We do a responsible waste management through reduction, recycling and reutilization. The organic waste is given to our animals or placed in the organic cell to be used later as fertilizer in our land. The inorganic products like eletronic stuff, paper, glass and packaging are separated and placed in the recycling. We also have a motto "Keep what you don't want to have what you need" and thus we keep and reuse various materials and products.
Concerning the water and energy management, we have a tank and a well where we save and use the rainwater to water our gardens and supply our house and swimming pool. Our lamps are energy-saver and our electronic devices are low energy consumption. Also, we encourage our guests to use the water in a responsible way and save energy, like turn off unecessary lights, change the towels just when it's really necessary.
During the winter, all the house is warmed by the fireplace and the wood is from our property and from a local lumberman. The wood that we use comes from trees planted for this purpose.
We utilize fruits, aromatic herbs and vegetables of the season from our vegetable garden/orchard and from the local producers. On request we prepare typical portuguese meals with portuguese products from the region and from our sea.
The air quality in the farm is protected by a high tree density. Although we are localized within a city, we are proud to have 2 ha of land which is a very rich biodiversity niche . Here you can find an infinite of flora such native trees like oaks, cork trees, stone pines and other plants and flowers. This environment provides the conservation of our visible and audible diverse fauna, besides our domestic animals. We are animal lovers so we care and provide qualified accommodation for the guest's animals.
We advice and guarantee the sustainable mobility through the use of public transports which are near the house, the bicycles that we provide and the existence of pedestrian pathways in the city and in the mountain (Sítio Rede Natura 2000).

For us it’s very important to personalize the stay of each guest, so we are prepared to satisfy their wishes! We want our guests to feel part of our family as well as part of our community. We integrate and promote the local community! Our staff and collaborators are from this region and they share our ecological policy. We always prefer the local suppliers, to whom we buy the marvelous bread made in wood oven, the handmade biscuits, the vegetables and fruits from our neighbors, the cheese, jams and wines from a local wine farm.
We encourage our guests to shop locally, eat in local restaurants and to attend in the local cultural, sports and environmental activities, promoting partnerships with the local agents. Our Guesthouse is decorated with masterpieces from a local artist, which can be bought by the guests. Also, we provide a lot of books about local themes.
We support local associations with a strong intervention in society, like firefighters, institutions supporting underprivileged children and elderly, popular and religious events, through monetary donations or through goods. Our guests are personally informed about the region and the interesting points. We provide them a map and any information or help they may need.
