Description of Ecuador adventure holiday, tailor made

Mainland Ecuador packs a lot of spectacular natural beauty into a tiny area. From Cotopaxi and cloud forest to capybaras and even jaguars, scenery and wildlife compete for your attention at every turn. Take nine days and you can really get stuck in. The best way to enjoy this country is to be adventurous – and you can have the perfect adventure on this tailor-made tour.

From Quito, Ecuador’s capital, you’ll be whisked straight to the slopes of Cotopaxi, the active Andean volcano, for mountain biking. After a rewarding soak in the hot springs at Banos, cycle down into the Amazon Basin where you’ll stay in a lodge surrounded by tropical rainforest. A boat trip gets you to the Arajuno River and an animal rescue centre where you can see toucans, parrots and monkeys, so you know exactly what to look out for in the wild.

See lovely traditional ways of life preserved in the communities who live along the river banks – and then reach the exciting churning waters of the Upper Napo River. Prepare for a wild ride; here you can tackle big waves on a thrilling white water rafting adventure. Treat this exciting day out as preparation you for further white-knuckle rafting on the famous Quijos River. Reward yourself afterwards with a soak in the ‘Valley of the Waterfalls’ – a relaxing end to your trip.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

All of it. Ecuador is such a diverse country, we loved every moment.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Embrace the experience and try everything.
Prepare to deal with a lot of wet clothing and limited means of drying them.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, focus was on reducing energy consumption and the activities/accommodation were with local and not corporate entities.

Environmental concerns were key in the places we visited.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Stunning beyond words, a real once in a lifetime experience.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

Our Equatorial Adventure takes you through some of the most biodiverse areas in the Americas. During your exploration of the Amazon jungle you will have the chance to visit one of our partners, Amazoonico, a wildlife refuge for animals that are native to the local jungle habitat but have been injured or rescued from illegal captivity. All the entry fees (included in the cost) go towards keeping the refuge running and supporting their projects to release rehabilitated animals. They also purchase and protect a large area of the rainforest by discouraging local hunters and professional loggers.

During our hikes and mountain biking experiences, your guides will ensure that you travel on trails and tracks that have been specifically established for each activity and also that rubbish is taken back and disposed of appropriately. As this trip takes you through some ecologically sensitive habitats, your guide will brief you on the special flora and fauna you will come across and on appropriate ways to maximise your enjoyment while minimising your environmental impact.

The white water rafting section of the trip also takes you to some of Ecuador’s most pristine areas, including the Llanganates National Park and the Quijos Valley. Again, your rafting guides will inform you about how to minimise the impact of tourism on these special environments and will keep an eye on the litter to make sure leave nothing behind but footprints.

People

Our Ecuadorian partners have worked hard to create lasting and mutually beneficial relationships with a variety of indigenous communities in the Amazon rainforest. Every trip we organise will include a visit to a different community, who will share their way of life with you such as their hunting techniques and give you a unique insight into life in the jungle. We emphasise making these experiences mutually beneficial, so your guide will make you aware of important cultural sensibilities and help you get the most your of your stay. We want to create a positive social experience for everyone involved, on top of the fair payment for the community visits that is included in the price.

The hotels we stay in elsewhere in Ecuador all meet our minimum social responsibility criteria including employing and training staff from the local area and buying food from local farmers. Many are also involved in developing tourism infrastructure in their area to be more sustainable, both socially and environmentally, for example by linking with local NGOs to develop ecotourism ideas. In addition, once you have returned to the UK we can help you stay in touch with any of the projects that you visit on your trip.
