Cinque Terre holiday, Italy
Description of Cinque Terre holiday, Italy
This eight day holiday is an active one, negotiating Liguria’s wonderful Cinque Terre coastal path, and its national park, not only by foot but also by bike, boat and sea kayak. This region is aglow with colours, from the multi-coloured paint of the houses that cling to cliffs, to the ever changing colour of the sea.
The Cinque Terre is so called because of the five cliff top villages that line this bit of coastline where the “Via dell'Amore” path allows you dip in and out of sparkling coves. Starting in Levanto, we take a guided hike to Monterosso, one of the five. Then we take a train back to Levanto, where we also get time to take a bike ride along an old railway line.
Other hikes include from Riomaggiore, which we also access by train, allowing us to walk back into Levanto, as always sticking to the coast. And the hike from Santa Margherita to Portofino is a particular favourite with our guests. In Portofino we also get a chance to do some sea kayaking, a great opportunity to see this gorgeous coastline from a different perspective. The fact is, that whichever way you travel in the Cinque Terre, or wherever you go, this coastal gem never disappoints.

PlanetThe very ethos of our style of travel is responsible; small groups on fully escorted tours, experiencing the very best of a region, a culture and a landscape, with a friendly local hand guiding the way. Our itineraries are designed to give our travellers real life experiences without compromising the part of the world we are exploring; to travel responsibly is at the heart of our commitment as a global tour operator.
From an environmental perspective, we encourage all travellers on this trip to arrive at our starting point of Levanto by train. Rail travel is not only one of the most carbon efficient methods of journeying across Europe, but it also gives the opportunity to see some fantastic scenery along the way. Through the itinerary you’ll journey by a combination of train, boat and of course on foot, exploring as the locals do.
Steps will be taken throughout your trip to further reduce our environmental impact while in country. Small measures can make a big difference to the overall picture and you will notice hopefully little actions as we go. For example, all travellers in the group will be encouraged to travel with refillable water bottles and purification tablets rather than purchasing water in plastic bottles to minimise waste and your group leader will also be on hand to advise on the responsible discarding of rubbish throughout the trip, recycling wherever possible.
PeopleOn this waking holiday through Italy’s beautiful Cinque Terre region you can be confident that your trip will tread lightly, supporting local industry and initiative, providing employment opportunities and giving you, our traveller a fantastic holiday experience and a greater personal understanding of the history, culture and romance of this stunning location.
You’ll stay in private, comfortable hotels, locally owned and reflective of the traditional style of the region, and eat where the locals do under the guidance of your local guide (should you wish them to point you in the right direction). The three dinners included on this trip will be focussed around local cuisine, and include a special fish dinner in Santa Margherita. All meals taken as a group will favour smaller, traditional, often family run establishments who source produce locally and through whose patronage we are supporting local industry.
Your group will be led throughout by a professional local group leader. They will lead the daily walks and be on hand to facilitate any and all tour arrangements. Not only does our use of a local team provide steady employment for members of local communities, but it gives our trips a very special local perspective on the places we go and the people we meet.
