Explore a fascinating and less-visited corner of north-east India with this small group journey through Assam and Nagaland. Wildlife-rich floodplains meet long-held cultural traditions here, where the wide waters of the Brahmaputra River meet the forest habitats of Kaziranga National Park. The itinerary combines time in nature with meaningful encounters in rural communities, culminating at the Hornbill Festival near Kohima, where Naga tribes gather to celebrate their heritage through music, dance and ceremony. Beginning in Assam, you travel by road and river, visiting Majuli Island to explore satras and observe traditional crafts, before continuing to Nagaland’s Mon district. Here, you visit a few villages near the Myanmar border, where you can learn about Konyak culture and daily life. Returning to Assam, the journey continues via historical sites in Sivasagar and a visit to a tea estate, before heading to Kohima for two days at the festival. The final stage is spent in Kaziranga National Park with multiple jeep safaris, offering excellent opportunities to see one-horned rhinos and other wildlife. Encounters along the way are varied and memorable. Sharing a meal in a village home, watching mask-making on Majuli, or listening to traditional music performances at the Hornbill Festival all offer insight into the region’s kaleidoscopic cultures. Wildlife experiences add another dimension, from listening to hooting gibbons in Hollongapar Sanctuary to the rich biodiversity of Kaziranga, where grasslands and wetlands support a wide range of species. Wherever possible, we also use locally, responsibly-sourced rural lodges and home stays whose very raison d'être is to safeguard and even enhance the natural habitat surrounding them, both for their own sake and that of nature.
People
We firmly believe that they are who make these places special and that they should benefit from our visit. Therefore, where ever possible we use local guides and locally-owned lodges, such as that in Mon, shops and eateries. We do our best to ensure that the benefits of our tours reach as widely as possible into the communities where they operate. We also support a small portfolio of charities and local grassroots organisations. In Nagaland, we send small client groups into Konyak Naga tribal lands to spend quality time with villagers. There not only cultural osmosis can happen, the tribal society can equip themselves better financially to keep funds flowing back into the local community at the granular level.
