Description of Premium Namibia small group holiday

There’s nowhere like Namibia. This southern African country is a vast desert landscape, with high dunes bashed by Atlantic waves, and extraordinary scattered wildlife converging on the rare water sources. The towns and cities are interesting cultural centres; the space between them a photographer’s dream.

This tour is a circuit around Namibia’s best sites, starting and finishing in Windhoek. First, you’ll head south into the deserts, where you’ll find Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, amazing dune landscapes populated only by a few petrified trees. From here you’ll head to the Skeleton Coast, and Swakopmund town, where you can spot birds in Walvis Bay. Heading up the ‘Skeleton Coast’ by car, you’ll eventually turn inland in the north of the country, towards Damaraland, famous for its desert elephants.

The holiday’s grand finale is in Etosha National Park, where you can go on safari in the morning and the evening and watch the animals around the park’s water holes. There are 340 bird species to spot, as well as elephants, Hartmann’s mountain zebra and the very elusive black rhino. This trip directly supports Helping Rhinos, a charity which is working to ensure the long-term survival of the rhino.

This holiday exclusively uses local leaders, and local guides, to give you the best experience of the country. They’ll know whether you’ve spotted a springbok or an oryx in Sesriem, and what’s petrified the trees in Damaraland.

This is a premium tour of Namibia, meaning that the accommodation has been carefully picked out for its quality. Take Desert Hills Lodge near Sossusvlei, where you can stay in luxurious thatched chalets, on a small outcrop facing west. Raise a toast to the desert at sunset – the landscape might be parched, but you don’t have to be.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The Desert Hills Lodge hotel. We chose trip specifically for this hotel and it didn’t disappoint. Outstanding hotel and food.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take layers as go from 40 degrees desert heat to 15 degrees in Swakopmund at coast.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. Very good accommodation and good as expected from premium trip. Worth the premium price for Desert Hills lodge alone! Also worth premium for more relaxed itinerary (not relentless or tiring) and comfier and speedier transport.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

Where possible we choose to travel by land rather than air. By minimizing the use of flights on our trips, we are making journeys more stimulating and more sustainable for travellers. This trip through Namibia does not include any flights, providing all transport by road. We ensure our vehicles are fuel-efficient and well maintained with regular servicing. We use vehicles that are an appropriate size to suit the group size. For example, we wouldn’t use a 16-seater van if we only had five people travelling with us. We optimize our driving routes to reduce travel time and our carbon footprint, and we turn the engine off when travellers are visiting a site and not in the vehicle.

We know our wildlife, are committed to conservation it and encourage guests to follow our lead.
We believe that wild animals should be viewed – with no contact or interaction – doing what they do best: living in the wild. This trip includes game drives in the Naukluft Mountains and Etosha National Park. Our leaders are trained to ensure that visitors don’t call out, whistle or try to get the attention of an animal as uncommon noises cause stress for them. Our drivers and local guides are also trained not to use their vehicle to get an animal to move or drive off road to get a better view or get closer to the animals.

People

We encourage travellers to act like locals, respecting the traditions and culture of the destination they’re travelling through. In many Namibian villages and small communities this means dressing conservatively with all travellers covering their arms and legs. Our local leaders will be sure to explain when and where it’s respectful to cover up.

The best folk to show you the heart of a destination are the ones that live there, which is why we work exclusively with local leaders. Our leaders are not only travel experts, they’re teachers, travel gurus and enthusiastic purveyors of grassroots experiences. They’ll just as easily steer you through the laneways of a city as help you strike up a conversation with the locals – and all with a smile. On this trip through Namibia, travellers will also be joined by local guides in several places. In each location these guides will bring to life the destination, its history and what makes it special. That might be the desert flora and fauna of Sesriem, the paintings of the Twyfelfontein Bushmen, or the Petrified Forest of Damaraland.
