Carbon Reduction
Accommodations on our trip use renewable energy and take steps to reduce their carbon footprint.

On night one, guests will stay at Bergen Børs, a hotel that has subscribed to the ‘Eco-Lighthouse’ environmental management scheme that delivers a set of sustainable regulations and requirements to operations in the country. The hotel uses water-saving showers and eco-friendly cleaning products while avoiding single-use plastics to limit its demand and damage to surrounding resources. All ingredients used in its restaurants are resourced locally and seasonally.

On nights two and three, guests stay at Knutholmen Hotel which is also ‘Eco-Lighthouse’ certified. The hotel uses special technology that connects its booking system to automated heating to reduce unnecessary use in unoccupied rooms. It also avoids single-plastic use and sources its produce and products from local businesses, reducing its consumption of red meat and famed fish.

On nights four and five, guests will stay at the family-owned and operated Hotel Alexandra. The ‘Eco-Lighthouse’ certified hotel uses only energy from a nearby fjord and electricity from a renewable local hydropower, lowering its energy consumption and emitting no greenhouse gas emissions. All of its suppliers are from local communities. Its departments focus on waste separation, resulting in a reduction of food waste by 76%. The hotel promotes electric car use, providing 24 charging stations near the hotel and also facilitates trails, building the Skåla trail to control traffic, avoid wear and tear beyond the trail, avoid erosion and encourage physical activity.

On nights six and seven, guests stay at Hotel Union Øye where all heating and electricity is hydro-powered. All construction materials in its recent renovations were sourced locally and its staff are hired locally. The property encourages electric car use, providing charging stations near the hotel.

On night eight, guests stay at the family-owned and operated Hotel Brosundet. The hotel is environmentally certified following ISO 14001, an internationally recognized standard for environmental management systems. The property houses a special floating dock on the nearby channel, absorbing waste that floats in its waters, known as the Aquapod. The staff use leftover breakfast items for their lunches, minimizing food waste. It reuses leftover wax from candles, delivering them to local schools for their art classes. It also uses refillable toiletries, glass containers, and reusable crockery, limiting single-use plastics.

During our Norway adventure, we use shared local transport to reduce the CO2 per person. This includes a boat tour along the coast to Florø and two boat rides to Vingen. To reduce carbon emissions, we’ve also curated the itinerary to incorporate human-powered transport as an essential and enjoyable way to explore the area during each day of this tour.

For example, we visit the iconic Bryggen during a walking tour, embark on a guided walk through a historic fishing village in Kalvåg, hike to a viewpoint in Lodalen Valley and to the Skageflå mountain farm. During our visit to the fjords, we spend a day kayaking a section of the beautiful Norangsfjord to Urke, witnessing breathtaking views sustainably while avoiding disruptions to local ecosystems.

Environment and Wildlife
We also operate this tour with a maximum group size of 18 travelers to minimize our impact on the culture and the environment where we visit.

Some accommodations on this trip reduce their environmental impacts by using renewable energy resources, such as Hotel Alexandra which uses only energy from a nearby fjord and electricity from a renewable local hydropower and Hotel Union Øye, where all heating and electricity is hydro-powered. We hire local, Norwegian guides who help guests to view the wildlife in a responsible way (i.e. keeping minimum distances, not using camera flashes, and not disturbing the animals).

Our trip includes visiting Vingen, one of the largest rock carving sites in Northern Europe, and a protected area allowing only organized traffic and visits with permits. Our visit supports the preservation of the carvings and archaeological research to discover their historical meanings.

We employ local, Norwegian guides to join us on our excursions. Our itineraries prioritize visits to small villages and communities like the Kalvåg historic fishing village, a small village and sheep farm near Nordfjord, a village in Nordfjordeid, and the Art Noveau town of Ålesund. During these visits, guests are encouraged to explore the community and connect with local people.

For meals, our tour brings guests to various local restaurants and small cafes, featuring tasty Norwegian fare and fresh, locally sourced seafood.
