Travel guides

Tanzania & Zanzibar
Our guide takes you across the great plains of the Serengeti to the underwater coral cities of Zanzibar’s Indian Ocean reefs.
Zanzibar
Its powdery white sand and turquoise ocean are famous, but Zanzibar has more to offer than just a beach break.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

CARBON REDUCTION

The shared transport nature of this small group trip reduces CO2 emissions on a per person basis.

In the Serengeti, the camps abide by a code of responsible practice in relation to energy conservation, eg with waste recycling (glass, plastics, ‘wet waste' ), sewage disposal, air emissions, pesticide-use, noise reduction and visual pollution.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

The trip uses mobile tented camps with a focus on being ecologically friendly: lighting and charging facilities are by solar energy; all waste is removed, and when the camp moves, the area it occupied is left as it was found.

The guides used on these itineraries have many years' experience at guiding in this region, so advise guests on wildlife, keeping a good distance from the animals and also the impact on the park from their visit.

The guiding company used on this trip actively support the community where possible, and have been instrumental in assisting with ‘give a net, save a life’ mosquito net distribution. Other projects in the community include refurbishing and building schools, tree-planting, etc.

People

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

Accommodation providers on this trip have employed staff from the nearby communities. In Tanzania, the lodges are owned by a third generation Tanzanian Sikh family from Moshi, and their relationship with the villages and rural areas surrounding the lodges has been strengthened by their decision to recruit, train and hire people from their own neighbourhoods.

The Guiding company have refurbished a school at the village of Misigiyo where water, solar lighting and a library were developed.

LOCAL ECONOMY

Tourism to the areas on this itinerary automatically brings conservation fees which are used to contribute towards local community development projects, such as providing clean water, building health centres, and developing school provision, and to wildlife conservation, including research into wildlife movement and numbers.

The properties used in the itinerary focus on providing opportunity to the local community through: purchasing fresh food stuff; selling artifacts and handicrafts from various local community groups in their gift shops; and skills development and employment through work-training opportunities that allows youth to gain marketable skills leading to meaningful work. They enhance guest experience by exposing them to the diverse range of local cultures and ethnic groups through art, dance, song, musical and theatrical displays whilst economically empowering the local people.
