Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
CARBON REDUCTIONOptimized Itineraries: We've carefully planned our tour routes to minimize the need for air travel altogether. This means focusing on specific regions or designing itineraries that allow for efficient ground transportation.
Airline Emissions Information: We understand customers will likely need to fly to start their holiday. Our tour notes include information relating to resources where you can check airline CO2 emissions. This helps customers compare different carriers and choose options with lower environmental impact.
Rail Preference: Wherever feasible and where reliable services are available, we've replaced domestic flights with rail journeys. Sri Lanka’s extensive railway network offers a comfortable and immersive way to experience the country's diverse landscapes. Train travel significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to flying. While the focus is on sustainability, we also believe rail travel adds a unique charm to the Sri Lanka experience. It provides a chance to interact with locals, observe daily life, and soak in the changing scenery in a way air travel can't match.
Vegan and vegetarian food: When it comes to whether Sri Lankan food is vegetarian or vegan-friendly, the answer is a resounding "yes" – it's a paradise for plant-based eaters, much better for the planet.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
We believe in supporting local NGOs, and currently offer the option to include a donation to carefully selected organizations as part of your tour cost. Of course, you have the ability to opt-out if you prefer. Even if you choose not to donate directly, many of our Sri Lanka tours include visits to these NGOs, which helps support their work and brings valuable awareness to their causes.
People
LOCAL ECONOMYWe make efforts to work with locally owned and operated accommodations where possible and we’re happy to advise that all accommodations we use in Sri Lanka are Sri Lankan owned and operated.
Local Guides: We exclusively employ local guides who possess invaluable knowledge and insights about their regions. This directly supports their livelihoods and fosters authentic cultural exchange.
Craft and Cooperative Markets: We prioritize visits to craft and cooperative markets where travellers can purchase unique, locally-made products. This directly benefits artisans and supports traditional skills.
Community Engagement: Where available, we include activities that offer meaningful interaction with local communities. This could include village visits, homestays, or supporting local NGOs. These experiences generate revenue for the communities while providing travellers with a deeper understanding of the local culture.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
We're proud to say that 100% of our local team in Sri Lanka are of Sri Lankan origin. We believe in the importance of employing local people who have deep knowledge and passion for their culture and country.
Our approach to tour guides is flexible to ensure the best possible experience:
4 or more passenger per group: We often employ a dedicated local guide who accompanies the group for the entire tour, fostering a strong connection and providing continuity.
Under 4 passengers: We strategically partner with local guides from each destination. This allows us to tap into their specialized expertise and directly benefit the communities we visit.
We strongly believe in fostering economic opportunities within the local communities and are committed to working with talented individuals who help us provide authentic and enriching travel experiences. We also deeply value creating economic opportunities for those who often face exclusion. While many of our activities indirectly support locals, our local team also directly employ individuals from marginalized backgrounds.
