Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
CARBON REDUCTIONSaving CO2 emissions, energy and waste is an important goal.
We serve plant based, locally sourced organic food, and change our menu with the seasons to ensure we are creating as minimal impact on the environment as possible.
We help to make the journey to MoaAlm as environmentally friendly as possible by encouraging people to travel by train rather than by plane or car. We offer a free group transfer from the train station in Lienz and from the bus in Huben.
We offer guided hikes on 5 days of each holiday. MoaAlm is ideally located as a starting point for numerous hikes, so we avoid the use of cars as often as possible.
A vacation with us lasts a whole week and we rarely offer shorter stays. We want guests to slow down and to be here with all senses.
Our water is supplied directly from a mountain spring and our heating system is a brand new 'eco' pellet burning system. Even in winter our South facing position can also provide supplementary energy from our solar bank. The thickly insulated walls and the triple-glazed windows ensure that we can often turn off the radiators. We encourage our guests to consciously use the lighting and heating in their rooms. We use LED and energy-saving light bulbs, water-saving shower heads and environmentally friendly cleaning agents and detergents. Towels and bed linen are only changed at the request of guests.
Wherever possible, we avoid waste, for example by shopping with little packaging and well-planned quantities. The waste is separated and recycled wherever possible. Each team member tries to make a contribution to the protection and preservation of soil, water, air, flora and fauna.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
We are located in the middle of the mountains, on the edge of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Every day, life at MoaAlm reminds us of the preciousness of our environment which it is our goal to protect. By exploring the mountains on foot with our guests, we want to introduce them to a sustainable activity. Our local mountain guides take guests on daily hikes in our surroundings and inspire them with their enthusiasm for alpine plants, wildlife and the beauty of nature.
People
LOCAL ECONOMYMoaAlm Mountain Retreat stands proud at 1800 meters and without a neighbor in sight. We love our secluded location, but we also love the village! Our house is situated just 3km above the small community of Kals am Grossglockner, a farming community with a strong mountaineering tradition.
The connection to the people in our region means a lot to us and we prefer to use local structures, services and products. These include local guides, restaurants in the village, providers of firewood, food, drinks, flowers and much more.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
Our small team of four lives and works at MoaAlm: We want them to be happy and stay long-term, of course. Good working conditions, fair income, social benefits and enough freedom to enjoy the mountains of East Tyrol go without saying.
It is mainly women who work at MoaAlm. We feel that the holidays we offer are very empowering for us as female hosts and guides, but also for our guests. Together with other people we experience nature, ourselves in yoga and the confidence in our own abilities in the mountains.
