Our walking in the Austrian Alps holidays & tours

You’ll be treated to views of some of the prettiest peaks in Europe on our walking holidays in the Austrian Alps. You might head up into the Tyrol, combine winter walking with cross country skiing, or hike by day and stay in a yoga retreat by night. Our holidays are a really rewarding way to explore, thanks to local guides who’ll show you all the best routes, as well as the farm shops, strudel cafés and schnapps bars along the way. A warm welcome comes as standard in our locally run accommodation, along with hosts who know the paths from their doorstep like the back of their hands – usually because they’re out hiking them on their days off.

Walking in the Austrian Alps holiday highlights

A contender for Europe’s mightiest mountains

Austria has over 200 mountains over 2,000m – more than any other country in the Alps. It’s also the most glaciated country, with glaciers carving out valleys, cirques, moraines, crevasses and high-altitude lakes. That all makes for a spectacular backdrop for hikers. For all its drama, you can choose to aim for the peaks on multi-day hut-to-hut treks or leave them as background characters and concentrate on strolling the lakes and valley villages instead.

Small group & self guided trips

Most of our walking holidays in the Austrian Alps are small group tours headed up by mountain guides. Their expertise allows you to delve into this dramatic terrain with confidence. They also give you the chance to put away the apps and maps, widening your eyes and ears to the play of light across the peaks, tiny edelweiss and soaring eagles, and the chime of cowbells across the valleys. Our self guided trips usually stick to easier lakeside loops and valley-to-valley wanders – all on itineraries designed by our walking experts.

Snowy winters or summer sunshine?

The Austrian Alps see a sensational seasonal transformation. In winter, our trips offer an exciting alternative to the traditional ski break: a deep dive into fresh, frosty paths, often combined with cross country skiing or snowshoeing that take you where boots – and the big downhill ski hills – cannot. Come spring and summer, snowmelt reveals golden buttercup meadows and lakeside swimming platforms made for post-hike dips. Higher routes also become more accessible, making summer the best season for summit treks.

Peak stays: from mountain chalets to high-altitude hotels

Our accommodation is often a highlight, going beyond simply offering you a place in which to refuel and revive after a day’s hiking. We’ve got stylish retreats with mountain-view hot tubs and glass yoga studios, as well as remote huts that take their schnapps menus super seriously. For all their differences, there’s one theme: small, locally run accommodation that keeps your money invested in the community.
