This adventure through Sardinia has been designed with minimal environmental impact in mind, favouring human-powered travel, local experiences, and shared transport wherever possible. Instead of covering vast distances by internal flights or long coach journeys, the itinerary stays local, focusing on in-depth exploration of Sardinia’s south-west, reducing both transport time and emissions.

Several days of the trip involve walking or hiking, such as the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara coastal trail (7km), exploration on foot through Nebida, Piscinas, and Montevecchio, and immersive city walking tours in Cagliari and San Sperate. For sunrise or sunset moments, guests often walk or cycle to reach viewpoints, such as Molentargius Park and Laveria Lamarmora.
Shared ground transport is used between locations, reducing per-person carbon output.

Accommodations are small-scale and locally run, often agriturismi or converted heritage sites, which typically have a lower carbon footprint than large hotel chains. Meals are rooted in local, seasonal cuisine, from fresh seafood to centuries-old breadmaking in Orroli and most food is sourced from nearby farms or producers. Vegetarian options are widely available and encouraged.

Guests are given tips and guidance on travelling responsibly.

Environment And Wildlife

Nature isn’t just a backdrop on this journey, it’s woven into each day. Guests visit Sardinia’s Molentargius Saline Regional Natural Park, a protected wetland that is home to over 230 bird species, including the iconic pink flamingos. This visit supports local conservation efforts and educates guests on the fragile saltwater ecosystems just outside Cagliari.

Another standout is the visit to Saline Conti Vecchi, where guests ride through salt flats that double as an industrial heritage site and a thriving habitat for birdlife. The itinerary also includes several hours in Piscinas and the Costa Verde, one of Sardinia’s most biodiverse regions, where guests walk among Europe’s highest sand dunes, shaped by the mistral winds, and observe native flora adapted to the coastal desert environment.

Accommodations on the trip are selected in part for their environmental practices, including the use of traditional building materials, low plastic use, and nature-restorative settings, such as La Pecora Nera, a sheep farm practicing sustainable grazing and land care. The Sound Garden in San Sperate is another excellent example of artistic reuse of natural materials.

Throughout the trip, expert local guides explain the ecological significance of each area, encouraging guests to tread lightly and connect with Sardinia’s wild side in a respectful, informed way.

This trip has been intentionally curated to channel economic benefits directly to Sardinian communities, particularly in regions that receive far fewer tourists. Every accommodation on the itinerary is locally owned, from boutique hotels in Cagliari to agriturismo-style stays in Nebida, Montevecchio, and Barumini.

Instead of international chains or all-inclusive resorts, guests stay in restored buildings or family-run B&Bs, offering a much more intimate, grounded experience. Meals are shared in local restaurants or hosted by artisans and farmers like the breadmakers of Orroli or Monica at La Pecora Nera, who preserve the endangered black sheep breed and its dairy heritage. These visits support micro-enterprises and help keep centuries-old traditions alive.

The trip also incorporates local markets, small craftspeople, and cultural initiatives like San Sperate’s mural project, encouraging visitors to contribute meaningfully to a living economy rather than simply consume it.

We exclusively employ local guides and partners with regional experts to lead each part of the journey. From the archaeologists at Su Nuraxi to women-led initiatives like Kentos breadmaking collective, the itinerary gives travellers direct access to local knowledge-holders who are passionate about their culture and community.

We are committed to ensuring all workers are paid fairly and above the minimum wage, and we favour inclusive, often family-run businesses, where employment opportunities are created for women and rural youth. The itinerary also showcases women-led enterprises, such as the organic bread workshop in Orroli, and artists of the regions such as the Sound Garden of Pinuccio Sciola, a legacy project that continues to support the local art community.

The trip is LGBTQ+ friendly and designed to be welcoming to all travellers who respect local customs. We also work with our in-country partners to ensure sensitivity training and inclusivity are part of guide development.

While the rural terrain makes this trip unsuitable for those with very limited mobility, we are transparent about activity levels and always aim to match the right trip to the right traveller.
