Description of Yucatan holiday in Mexico, tailormade

Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula offers far more than its (admittedly beautiful) coastline, and this tailor made journey blends beach time with a deeper exploration of the region’s natural and cultural landscapes. From Caribbean shores to inland towns and protected reserves, it offers a varied and engaging way to experience the area.

Beginning in Playa del Carmen, the route moves to Isla Holbox, a car-free island where sandy streets and a slower pace define daily life. From here, you'll travel inland to Valladolid for visits to the mysterious and spectacular Chichen Itza and nearby cenotes,. You then continue on to Tulum and the Sian Kaan Biosphere Reserve, where lagoons and ancient canals provide a different perspective on the region.

The experiences on this Yucatan holiday are deliberately varied, from swimming in cenotes and kayaking in bioluminescent waters to exploring major archaeological sites. Sian Kaan stands out in particular, combining wildlife, wetland ecosystems and historical features in one setting.

Many activities are run by local cooperatives. This helps the trip feel more culturally immersive, as you'll constantly be meeting people who have lived in the area all their lives, and it also helps ensure tourism income supports communities and conservation work.

CARBON REDUCTION
For this Grand Tour of the Yucatán, concerted efforts have been made to minimize the carbon footprint associated with travel. Firstly, the itinerary encourages extended stays in each location, reducing frequent travel. Strategic planning of transfers and the use of shared transport, such as the ferry to Isla Holbox and shared shuttles, effectively reduce CO2 emissions per person compared to private or individual travel options. Moreover, the Bioluminescence Tour and Sian Ka’an Reserve exploration emphasize human-powered transport like kayaking and walking, promoting low-carbon activities. Committing to environmental responsibility, accommodations throughout the tour have been vetted for their eco-credentials, focusing on those using renewable energy sources where possible, and offering locally-sourced food to reduce the carbon footprint associated with dining.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
The tour includes numerous activities and accommodations that actively contribute to the protection and restoration of biodiversity. Several nights are spent in accommodations that implement policies to reduce environmental impacts, such as water conservation measures and the use of renewable energy. Particularly in Tulum and Valladolid, where significant efforts are made to integrate ecological preservation with guest experiences. The inclusion of tours like the one to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, incorporates entrance fees that support the conservation efforts of these protected areas. Additionally, experiences such as the unique Cenotes tour and the Sian Ka’an Reserve tour help fund local rewilding projects, with part of the tour costs directly contributing to habitat restoration initiatives.

LOCAL ECONOMY
This itinerary has been carefully curated to maximize the economic benefits to the local communities visited. All accommodations used in the trip are locally owned or have strong local ties, including transformative stays in Holbox and Valladolid. By employing local guides and including visits to local markets and heritage sites, the tour ensures that visitors' expenditures contribute directly to the local economy. Additionally, activities like the Sian Ka’an Reserve tour are run by local cooperatives, ensuring that financial benefits support community-managed conservation efforts.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY, AND DIVERSITY
Our operational strategy within Yucatán ensures substantial community benefits through employment and inclusivity. A significant number of our staff and those of our local partners are from the areas we visit, including many from indigenous communities. Efforts are made to provide income-generating opportunities for marginalized groups, which in Valladolid and Tulum includes working with vendors and guides who are women or from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Our commitment to diversity and inclusivity is also evident in our travel offerings, which include accessible options for travelers with limited mobility, and ensuring a positive, welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ travelers.
