Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

This is a sustainably designed luxury itinerary to allow our guests to explore Chile and Antarctica’s most extraordinary landscapes while supporting the people and places that make the region so special.

Visits to protected areas such as Torres del Paine include park entry fees, which directly fund conservation of landscapes and wildlife. We focus on low-impact activities such as walking tours and hikes, small-group excursions to minimise carbon emissions, reduce the number of vehicles and ease visitor pressure on sensitive sites.

Throughout these experiences, expert local guides share insights on the fragile ecosystems visited and offer practical tips for responsible travel, helping guests understand the local challenges and how to minimise their footprint.

Accommodation is also chosen for it its sustainability credentials:

Tierra Patagonia was designed with the environment in mind. Built from sustainable lenga wood, the innovative architectures blend naturally into the landscape. During construction, vegetation on the site was removed and kept in a greenhouse, then replanted around the hotel afterward to minimise damage to native flora. Energy efficiency is prioritized through solar power, LED lighting, and smart insulation, while water-saving systems and greywater reuse reduce consumption. The property has eliminated most single-use plastics, employs eco-friendly cleaning products, and runs comprehensive recycling and waste programs. Beyond its walls, Tierra Patagonia supports large-scale reforestation projects and conservation efforts within Torres del Paine National Park, helping preserve the region’s fragile ecosystems for future generations.

The Magellan Explorer is a purpose-built ship with sustainable engineering innovations to ensure efficient operations such as heat and water recycling, strict adherence to Tier III engine standards, and onboard biosecurity protocols. Plastic use is minimised, and cleaner alternatives are being introduced like synthetic e-Fuels, first used for the ship’s Zodiac boats and planned for its main engines and flight-operations. Its operators are a Carbon Neutral certified company and explicitly commit to carbon emission reduction via both efficiency measures and offsetting.

People

People are at the heart of everything we do. We work with local partners on the ground, who employ certified local guides and drivers. Where possible, excursions are a curated to show the best of the destination, allow guests to travel deeper and support the local community. The cooking class in Santiago directly supports local producers by sourcing ingredients from local markets, whilst at the same time promoting Chilean culinary heritage and traditions.

Tierra Patagonia, locally sources its cuisine and handmade furnishings to celebrate regional culture, while fair employment practices and local hiring strengthen the surrounding economy. By fostering meaningful cultural exchange and prioritizing the welfare of both guests and employees, Tierra Patagonia builds authentic connections that enrich everyone involved.

The operators of the Magellan Explorer promotes gender parity, and works closely with local communities in Chile. It also supports scientific research and citizen science programs onboard, and through the Antarctica21 Foundation engages in education and conservation initiatives for travellers and local populations alike.
