CARBON REDUCTION

We deliver genuinely low-carbon travel by design. Our journeys are shaped by wind, tide, and traditional seamanship, not engines, schedules, or high-impact infrastructure.

Wind-powered travel and sail cargo
We operate an established sail-cargo route between King’s Lynn and Wells-next-the-Sea, using only the power of wind and tide to move goods along the East Coast. This working route demonstrates that carbon-zero coastal transport is not historic nostalgia, but a practical and viable modern solution. Our longer voyages, including salt-marsh exploration, prioritise sail, oar, and tide wherever possible, with engine use limited strictly to safety-critical manoeuvres.

Renewable energy and electric propulsion
To further reduce emissions in sensitive environments, we have invested in solar panels to charge the electric engines used when operating within the salt marsh. This allows for quiet, low-impact access and manoeuvring, significantly reducing both carbon emissions and disturbance to wildlife. In recognition of this commitment, we have been awarded a Carbon Charter prize for leadership in practical, renewable-energy maritime operations.

No flying required
All trips take place in North Norfolk and are easily accessible by rail and local bus connections. Guests are actively encouraged to avoid flying, and we provide guidance on public transport options to Wells-next-the-Sea and Blakeney.

Low-impact accommodation
Guests sleep aboard traditional wooden sailing vessels, as historic crews once did, removing the need for energy-intensive accommodation. Where shore accommodation is requested, we prioritise small, locally run establishments.

Human-powered travel
Sailing, rowing, walking ashore, swimming, and shoreline exploration form a core part of every journey, ensuring movement is slow, quiet, and powered primarily by natural energy.

Local, seasonal food
All food provided is locally sourced within approximately 28 miles of our operations. Menus are seasonal and largely plant-forward, with vegetarian options always available, supporting Norfolk producers and reducing reliance on global supply chains.

Materials and waste reduction
Our fleet consists entirely of traditionally built wooden boats, which have a far lower end-of-life environmental impact than fibreglass vessels and support the continuation of traditional boatbuilding skills. We minimise single-use plastics, prioritise reusable equipment, and recycle responsibly.

We actively advise guests on how to reduce the wider carbon impacts of their trip, including low-carbon travel choices and mindful consumption throughout their journey.


ENVIRONMENT & WILDLIFE

Our experiences are designed to be nature-positive. Sailing quietly through salt marsh and coastal waters is one of the least disruptive ways to observe wildlife, allowing guests to engage deeply without intrusion.

Low-disturbance wildlife encounters
All wildlife viewing follows best-practice, non-invasive guidelines. We approach seals, birds, and marine life under sail at low speed, minimising noise and wake. No feeding, chasing, or close-quarter interaction is permitted.

Collaboration with local conservation bodies
We work alongside North Norfolk wildlife organisations to stay informed on sensitive habitats, seasonal restrictions, and conservation priorities across the salt marsh and coastal waters.

Active stewardship
Each voyage encourages practical care for place. Guests are invited to help collect marine debris from the salt marsh and shoreline, contributing directly to cleaner habitats in the North Sea and its estuaries.

Education through experience
Rather than formal lectures, guests gain understanding through immersion — learning how tides shape ecosystems, how historic trade depended on healthy waters, and why these environments remain vulnerable today. This builds long-term respect and advocacy for coastal nature.

Nature-first exploration
Sailing charters are among the lowest-impact ways to access fragile coastal environments. By choosing wind over engines and patience over speed, our trips actively support biodiversity by reducing disturbance and emissions.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY

We are firmly rooted in North Norfolk and operate entirely within the local economy. Accommodation on our trips is either aboard our traditional sailing vessels or, where shore stays are arranged, in small, independently owned local inns and guesthouses. We do not use international hotel chains.

We actively maximise local economic benefit throughout each voyage. All food provided is sourced from local producers within approximately 28 miles, supporting Norfolk farmers, fishers, bakers, and small food businesses. Vessel maintenance, boatbuilding, and specialist services are commissioned locally, helping to sustain traditional maritime skills. Shore time includes visits to working harbours, villages, and historic ports, ensuring guest spending directly supports local communities.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

All of our staff are local, drawn from the North Norfolk and wider regional community. We prioritise employing people with strong local knowledge of the coast, tides, wildlife, and maritime heritage, ensuring skills and income remain rooted in the area.

We create paid, hands-on opportunities for young people entering maritime, outdoor, and conservation-related careers, helping them develop experience and confidence in a supportive working environment. All staff are paid well above the UK minimum wage, and guests are encouraged to tip crew directly.

We are committed to inclusive and respectful employment practices. Opportunities are offered without regard to gender, race, sexual orientation, or background, and our experiences are LGBTQ+ friendly. Due to the physical nature of traditional sailing and tidal environments, trips are not suitable for all mobility needs; however, we are open and transparent and happy to discuss individual requirements in advance.
