CARBON REDUCTIONThe itinerary reduces reliance on flying where practical by including a train journey from Yogyakarta to Mojokerto on Day 4, rather than making this journey by air. The trip does still include domestic flights between Java, Bali and Flores because of the distances involved, including the flight to Labuan Bajo for the Komodo section.
Non-motorised activities are built into the itinerary, including cycling in Candirejo, walking and trekking around Mount Bromo and Komodo National Park, and an 11-kilometre white-water rafting experience on the Ayung River. These activities allow travellers to experience the landscapes without relying solely on motorised transport.
The accommodation used on this itinerary includes properties with published environmental initiatives. For example, The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta lists energy-conservation measures, efficient lighting and cooling, recycling, food-waste reduction, water-saving measures, refillable toiletries and locally sourced food.
The itinerary includes vegetarian and vegan food options at the accommodation and restaurants where available. The trip includes several opportunities to eat local Indonesian food, including lunch in Candirejo, a Balinese cooking and food experience, a Gianyar market visit and a traditional Megibung meal.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
The itinerary includes time in Komodo National Park, a protected area and key wildlife destination, where travellers hike with local guides to look for Komodo dragons and other wildlife and snorkel around the islands. The Komodo section is designed around observing wildlife in its natural habitat. The trip also visits the volcanic landscapes around Mount Bromo and includes nature-based activities around Bali.
Several accommodations have environmental policies individually. For example, The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta reports energy efficiency, water conservation, recycling, food-waste reduction, refillable toiletries and locally sourced food. Plataran Bromo also promotes environmental responsibility through its agricultural experiences, including growing and harvesting local produce and using leftovers to feed livestock.

LOCAL ECONOMYThe itinerary creates opportunities for regional economic benefit through local guides, village visits, craft experiences, markets and locally based activities. Travellers visit Candirejo village, experience traditional gamelan music, meet a Kris-maker, visit artisan centres in Bali, explore Gianyar Night Market and visit a local market in Labuan Bajo. These experiences provide opportunities for local residents, artisans, guides and food producers to benefit directly from tourism. The accommodation portfolio includes locally rooted Indonesian properties such as Plataran Borobudur, Plataran Bromo and Komaneka Bisma.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
This itinerary includes private guiding, local cultural practitioners, village experiences, craft makers, market visits and locally based nature guiding, creating income-generating opportunities across several communities. The itinerary supports local economies through private boat travel in Komodo National Park and visits to community-based cultural experiences. By using locally based guides and engaging directly with communities through village visits, craft experiences, markets and cultural activities, the trip helps ensure tourism spending reaches a diverse range of local people and businesses.
