Description of Gozo family activity holiday in Malta

A Gozo family activity holiday that offers a wonderful opportunity to explore this Maltese island in the middle of the Mediterranean. Gozo is a much underrated destination when it comes to family fun, the adventures here beginning the minute you take the ferry from Malta and start take in the island’s stunning seascapes. This is a small group tour, with no more than 24 people so that children have a chance to enjoy the company of other young people during their week of adventures.

On this holiday all the activities are included in the price and every day is different. From snorkelling or Mini B diving (May to September only), to rock climbing on the magnificent Gozitan cliffs, you will either be on the water or peering down onto it. Gozo is definitely an action filled and exciting place to be. Please note that diving is only for children aged ten and over, and will be at the diving instructor’s discretion, for health and safety reasons.

We have picked a traditional, rural base for this holiday: the village of Xaghra in the north east of the island which is conveniently located to the ancient Ggantija Temples. Because as well as its natural heritage, Gozo’s cultural heritage and history have been informed by many influences over time, from the Romans and Byzantine Empires to North African Arabs and of course Europeans. You will learn about these various influences on language, cuisine and crafts during your week here.

Staying at a locally owned hotel, it is rustic and traditional in style and within easy walking distance of Xaghra village square, where café and restaurant life thrives. The hotel has a swimming pool and sun bathing terrace and you will have a choice of hotel rooms or a bungalow upgrade.

We also offer another hotel on this trip if you want to stretch your family budget a little. This is a spa hotel, also in Xaghra village at the highest point on the island with superb views. The price of this holiday includes all activities on the itinerary, return flights between London and Malta (regional airports are also possible), transfers, accommodation, breakfasts, four lunches and dinners*, equipment and expert guides.

Please note: Any guests over 18 years old will need to pay an additional local Eco Tax of €0.50 per person per night (not exceeding the threshold of €5.00 per person).

*Only three lunches included if travelling March, April or October, as the fourth lunch is included in the Mini B diving activity.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Gozo family activity holiday in Malta

The island of Gozo is just 9 by 4 miles in size meaning that all the activities for this holiday are close together keeping motorized journey times to a minimum, any transfers are group transfers.

On such a small island tourism plays an important social and economic role. With limited work opportunities, many young Gozitans are forced to leave the island they love and move to Malta in search of work opportunities. The development of tourism is helping to stem this flow.

The hotel we use has been deliberately chosen as it is Gozitan owned and has an entirely Gozitan staff. The hotel also actively promotes Gozitan heritage as the central part of the hotel is a 350+ year old farmhouse which has been sensitively converted to keep its character whilst the restaurant menu actively promotes locally sourced foods and traditional dishes. This ensures that the economic benefits remain on the island and are spread beyond the hotel’s walls. The hotel is situated on the edge of Xaghra village, within walking distance to the main square where you can support a variety of locally owned restaurants and small shops. It is also the perfect place to interact with the friendly locals as it is very much a traditional village and not a tourist resort.

Our activity providers are truly passionate about their island. They wish to ensure, as do we, that the future of this pristine environment and the local heritage is preserved for generations. This is imparted to our guests throughout the week as clients are given a greater understanding of the heritage and culture, and what must be done to preserve it, in an active way. There is a strict leave no trace policy on all activities and clients will also visit some agri tourism projects throughout their stay.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

All of it was fantastic. Could not have been better. The holiday provides a great combination of activities and is so well organised. It is relaxing given that everything is organised so smoothly, but active as the family are out doing things each day - perfect. Our children loved it all, especially the lazy boat day.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Great family holiday. All activities are suitable for beginners but easily enjoyable for more experienced members of the group. The guides will tailor things to your ability. We had a great but small group and it worked really well.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The holiday benefited local businesses and the eco-day is a great way to see more of the local culture and to understand how things work on Gozo.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent - would highly recommend the holiday. The operator really knew the holiday so helped with our questions beforehand. The local hosts are English and French and know Gozo inside out and are extremely well organised and helpful.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

So many highlights! Our youngest loved the rock climbing, which was expertly supervised and our eldest loved the snorkelling and lazy boat day best. As for us, it's hard to choose, the Eco Day was much more than we anticipated and we really felt privileged to share their Gozo culture. We love sea kayaking and the shores of Gozo provided some excellent fun. The superb staff at the dive centre gave us an excellent introduction to diving and an unforgettable day. It's the fantastic people we shared our holiday with from the representative, Cornil, to the staff and our fellow holiday makers who have made it unforgettable.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Get your beach shoes, swimming costume and sun screen and GO!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Very much so, we really feel our tourist dollar went directly to the local communities.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent!
