Description of Kasbah du Toubkal in the Atlas Mountains

Just a 90-minute drive from the bustling souks, palaces and mosques of Marrakech, the Kasbah du Toubkal hotel is a tranquil retreat in the High Atlas Mountains. Once the summer home of a local chieftain, the kasbah had by the 1980s fallen into crumbling ruin. But today this magnificent historic property has been magnificently restored, serving as a luxurious hotel that delights visitors with the comforts of its rustic simplicity.

A stay at the Kasbah du Toubkal hotel in Morocco immerses you in the local Berber community. You can hike with knowledgeable trekking guides from the area, creating employment in remote rural areas. Trekking routes of varying levels of challenge surround the property, which sits at the trailhead for the famous Mount Toubkal Trail, which summits North Africa’s tallest peak. And after a day of walking you can enjoy hearty mountain cuisine back at the hotel. Many ingredients are sourced from the surrounding area, keeping down the carbon footprint of your trip.

The Kasbah du Toubkal is one of Responsible Travel’s most longstanding partners, and a great example of how tourism can provide benefits to local communities. A small tourism levy that all guests pay has contributed to a range of community projects, from a village school, to a hammam (where kasbah guests are encouraged to enjoy a soak) and an ambulance. Your stay here will also contribute directly to a charity that helps girls from mountainous areas stay in education by providing accommodation and care.

Due to its proximity to Marrakech, a stay at the Kasbah du Toubkal is frequently combined with a few nights at a luxury riad in the city, giving you the opportunity to enjoy two very different atmospheres. You can also continue on for a few days by the coast in the relaxed port city of Essaouira.
The Kasbah du Toubkal is one of the most renowned hotels in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains. But more than that; it is a perfect example of traditional Berber hospitality.

The peacefulness of the Kasbah, the warmth of the staff and the beauty of the surrounding landscape. The Kasbah itself was beautiful and peaceful and set in the most breath-taking backdrop. My favourite place was the roof terrace, where you could drink mint tea whilst reading your book or have lunch looking out onto the snow capped mountain tops - simply stunning. Read full review

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

We instigated a rubbish clearance policy in 1997 for the region including the building of a communal incinerator. We have equipped the Kasbah with water filters to discourage the use of plastic bottled water. All supplies are purchased locally as much as possible and all staff are from the local region. As much as possible of the Kasbah purchases are from the local area this includes both consumables for the running of the establishment and the materials and labour used in the construction process. We have also sponsored a "Tourist Code of good practise".

A NOTE ABOUT ANIMAL WELFARE: We work closely with “SPANA” a British charity working for the Protection of Animals abroad.
We only use mules whether ours or hired in that are in good health have Spana bits, are loaded with 60 to 80 kg of baggage and muleteers are discouraged/banned from riding when the mules are loaded. We worked with Spana to produce this website www.imlilvalley.com and associated pdf brochure for use by everyone involved in tourism to encourage good practice in several area’s of sustainable tourism including mule welfare.

People

We funded an Ambulance for the village and built an incinerator and instigated a rubbish clearance system. A 5% levy is made on the Kasbah income and handed to the village association (Association Des Basins d'Imlil) and Education For All. The Association Bassins d’Imlil covers the whole of the surrounding valleys. This association provides the ambulance that you see in Imlil which provides a service to the local population and visitors, other community projects that have been undertaken include the rubbish clearance system and the provision of the village Hammam. Education For All helps provide college education for girls from the rural High Atlas.
