Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Relaxing escape in Italy

Environment

Sunflower Retreats is a 'low profit eco tourism organisation', a large part of the profits on each booking go towards the rental of rooms of the village houses and accommodation options we use which include our treatment rooms and breakfast lounge, this is part of our eco tourism policy as our guests live within the village of Casperia ( not in a privately owned retreat ) and we work along side and employ local people therefore contributing to the local businesses and economy of the medieval hilltop village of Casperia and the Sabina area of Italy as a whole.Local businesses benefit from our visitors from local craft shops to local farmers as our visitors live alongside local people in the village and buy from the local community. We use many local houses for our accommodations renting from locals, employ local people and work with the villagers in order to enhance the local economy and integrate the concept of eco-tourism into the culture of Sabina. From our profits we also support festivals and local functions yearly.

We aim to continue to promote eco tourism and protection of nature. To promote eco tourism and traditional organic methods of farming we work along side anti bird hunting organizations in protecting the Sabina mountains fauna and Flora and in the rest of Italy and worldwide as a whole.

We work alongside local people as our groups are small and have a theme of relaxation and eco tourism and promote recycling within the village and energy saving concepts.

Community

We continue to bring work and economy balance to the village of casperia by bringing our international guests to our centre who in return live along side the local people and blend into the village community and village life .We sustain the concept of eco tourism and responsible tourism and do not dominate the village but rather blend into the beauty and harmony of the location. We continue to grow and change so to continue to make this possible.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The peaceful village and amazing setting for our yoga sesions. Lovely staff.
Great accommodation ( all options) Fantastic views. Delicious food. Totally
chilled out week.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Make sure you are reasonably fit. Apart from the yoga, wherever you go there is a steep uphill or downhill walk through the village. Cobbled paths and steps. Also
take some extra money as there are lots of tempting optional extras that you will
probably want to indulge in :).

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, the retreat obviously think about making the holiday benefit the
village without forcing a "tourist" atmostphere. Recycling and use of local
produce also evident.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent value for money. Laid back retreat/holiday.

This was one of the best holidays we have had. It was lovely getting to know a group of people, it was valuable to share a holiday with people who had a common interest. Getting up early for yoga in the morning and having a lovely breakfast was wonderful (we didn't think that we could do it!). Casperia is a wonderful and amazing place to relax in. The staff were so helpful and we were allowed the freedom to be with the group or to be alone. It was truly refreshing and a wonderful experience and we do, and will, highly recommend it to others.

We thought that the holiday definitely benefited local people and the fact that the old houses were converted and made to feel VERY homely and welcoming was so much better than staying in a hotel, ethically and practically. We were pleased that we could contribute positively to the town of Casperia as tourists. We loved the local supermarket and the fact that we could walk around safely and not need to rely on public transport to find anything of interest.

A wonderful idea for a holiday. Really well organised. Totally relaxing and refreshing. Absolutely beautiful.

A big thank you to Allan, Lucy, Paolo and Jenny.
