Description of Menorca walking holiday, Spain

Walkers who crave the coast will love this Menorca walking holiday, on the second largest island in the archipelago. It is also one of the most unspoiled and least populated islands, as you will discover hiking on some of the coastal and inland trails, either through the island’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve or along one of its many pristine headlands and beaches. Menorca has more beaches than Mallorca and Ibiza combined, and this tailor made itinerary certainly dips in and out of some of the most exquisite bays.

On this walking holiday you can also follow trails that take you back through Menorca’s fascinating history, because a little known fact about this Balearic beauty is that it has the greatest concentration of prehistoric sites anywhere in Western Europe. With a superb natural harbour at its capital city, Mahon, it has also been subjected to various invasions over the centuries, and consequently your walks will be dotted with historic sites such as castles, forts and watch towers. Indeed, many of them are linked by the Cami de Cavalls walking trail, first constructed for military purposes. Luckily today they are as peaceful and harmonious as you could possibly hope for, as walkers can access idyllic coves, beaches and turquoise waters.

This walking holiday is centre based, staying in an elegant 17th century Spanish finca, Morvedra Nou Hotel near Ciutadella in the south west of the island. Family run, and with exquisite gardens and a pool, the rooms are in the converted stables. With half board accommodation, the chef prides himself on producing fine, Menorcan cuisine. This holiday includes a car hire and means that, depending on the itinerary, you can drive to trail heads and we can arrange transfers for you to get back to your car at the end of the walk, if necessary.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Menorca walking holiday, Spain

UK Office:
We are well aware of the impact tourism has at home and abroad, and we make every effort to balance the environmental impact of travelling with the immense benefits sustainable tourism can bring to destinations and the people who live there. So we start in the office: we turn off all electrical equipment every night; we use energy-efficient bulbs; we measure print and paper consumption, and re-cycle wherever possible; we print our brochures on paper from sustainable sources, and send them out in bio-degradable packaging.

Leaders & local suppliers:
Situated in the south west corner of the island, Morvedra Nou is a beautifully converted traditional farmhouse run by Victoria Benedito, granddaughter of the original owners. Whilst all facilities are in keeping with luxury 21st century accommodation, some traditions remain as they have for years: for example. Each morning a new menu is delivered to your room so you can choose your evening meal before setting out for the day. In this way, Victoria can guarantee that all ingredients are bought fresh and personally prepared just for you. These might include fresh fish and seafood, local cheeses and meat from the tiny farms peppered across the island.

Group size:
Having no minimum number means that groups sizes can be small and therefore the trips have less impact on the environment.

Activity:
Walking has minimal impact on the environment as you provide most of the energy yourself and, when you’re strolling from village to village, you can enjoy a relationship with locals in a way motorists passing through never can. On foot, you get off the beaten track, and you’ll find that people treat you as a visitor rather than a tourist. Also, by walking independently, and not having to worry about keeping up with a group, you set the pace so you can soak up the sights, sounds and scents of your surrounds and really get under the skin of the place you’re visiting.

We proactively encourage walking clients to think about travelling responsibly too: packing light, saving water, buying locally and re-cycling all maps and route notes at the end of their trip.
