Description of Austria multi activity holiday

This exciting multi activity holiday is hosted at our unique and beautifully designed mountain house, situated high in the Austrian Alps.

With the focus on being ‘RelaxinglyActive’ the holidays we offer are a healthy balance of fresh air, mountain activities and great freshly cooked plant based food. A holiday with ua puts you right at the heart of our warm family atmosphere, with dedicated, enthusiastic staff, and a cosy but stylish living space.

HIKING:
Situated at 1800m, MoaAlm Mountain Retreat offers a superb base from which to explore the breathtaking mountains of East Tirol. We create a personalised holiday, giving you the opportunity to share our passion for the mountains, with three daily guided hikes with a local guide.

MOUNTAIN BIKING:
With high alpine trails, windy forest tracks, or speedy down hill bump tracks all available within cycling distance from our front door, our mountain bike guide is able to offer you the perfect day of riding for your level. You can choose between traditional mountain bikes or have a go on a e-mountain bike, allowing you to tackle more of the down hill without the strenuous up hill first!

RAFTING:
The river Isel that flows at the bottom of our valley is a unique river, being the only river in the Alps that has not been damned or used for hydroelectricity. Not only does this mean it is an excellent place to spot wildlife, but it is also excellent for rafting! We work with a trusted local rafting guide to ensure you have an incredible day out on the rapids.

FOOD:
We are passionate about healthy living and reducing our impact on the environment. Therefore included in your holiday are six three course evening meals which are entirely plant based. Our in house chef creates seasonal menus and our food is organic and as locally sourced as possible. We also offer a delicious, organic breakfast and freshly baked cakes with organic tea and coffee on a daily basis.

YOGA:
Every holiday with us includes five yoga classes in our in-house yoga studio with panoramic mountain views. Whenever the weather allows, we take our yoga practice outside to take advantage of the fresh mountain air. At MoaAlm we believe that yoga is for everyone, no matter what your age or level of fitness and, as such, our classes are prepared with all of our guests’ needs in mind.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES
If you would like an adrenaline rush, we can also arrange additional activities with our local partners, such as canyoning, paragliding and rock climbing.

ABOUT THE AREA
We are situated on the edge of the Hohe Tauren National Park underneath Austria's highest mountain, Groίglockner. This means we have a unique opportunity to spot rare wildlife such as Ibex on an almost daily basis. Our local guide is extremely knowledgeable about the flora and fauna around MoaAlm and will be able to tell you about the unique Alpine species you will see. Our local village Kals is still a traditional Alpine village, where many of the residents graze animals on the high alpine pastures. Kals is also home to a small ski resort and a few lovely traditional restaurants.

We were recently featured in The Guardian, in a list of 'mind, body and spirit breaks'.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

MoaAlm is situated at 1800m, it is 2km up the mountain from the settlement of Taurer, a fragile environment which it is our goal to protect.

Some days may involve carrying a picnic on a hike - guests will be actively involved in carrying out waste. Our water is supplied directly from a mountain spring and our heating system is a brand new 'eco' pellet burning system. The P4 pellet system has won many international quality awards in EU and USA, the most prestigious of all are the Blue Angel and the Austrian Ecolabel. Even in winter our south facing position can also provide supplementary energy from our solar bank.

The food we serve at MoaAlm is majoritively plant-based, organic and locally sourced where possible. we try to cook with the seasons to reduce food miles.
We try to reduce food waste, but where there is waste we compost it and use it on our garden.
We make an effort to fix instead of throw away things that break. All of our waste is recycled where possible, and this year we are especially aiming to reduce our plastic waste.

Natural materials have been used in the construction and renovation of MoaAlm where possible and we have been pleased to find a number of high quality, locally produced materials to use in the refurbishment. The local tradesmen we employ are highly skilled, particularly in mediums of wood, stone and locally-produced felt.

People

As far as possible, all of our food is locally sourced and organic. We are committed to investing in local businesses.

Guests will eat out for lunch on occasion and one evening at locally-run recommended restaurants.

The area also has an excellent ski school and advanced mountain guiding network of instructors that guests may choose to take advantage of.

We regularly take part in litter picking around the local area, and are trying hard to reduce our own plastic waste.

We will be employing a team of 4 local full time staff who will receive a generous package of accommodation, food, ski pass and salary. Opportunities will also be available through our staff incentive scheme to participate in training courses annually. This scheme is in place to encourage staff to make this a rewarding full time lifestyle choice that can be sustainable rather than just a seasonal short term option.

Local tradesmen have been involved in the renovation of MoaAlm and we have pleased to find a number of high quality, locally produced materials to use in the refurbishment. These tradesmen are highly skilled particularly in mediums of wood, stone and locally produced felt.
