Description of Romania photography tour, culture & traditions
Romania is a wonderful place for photography. Not only for its pristine rural landscapes and the architecture of its medieval towns, but also because there are many well-preserved traditional ways of life here that lend themselves perfectly to the photographer’s eye. On this 11-day Romania photography tour you’ll join a guided small group on a carefully designed itinerary that brings you into communities that are happy for themselves and their age-old customs to be photographed.
Capture scenes of farmers returning from the fields at sunset, and stacking hay onto carts with their pitchforks. Take a ride on a Mocanita, one of the few remaining narrow-gauge steam trains in Europe. Wander the streets camera in hand at a local religious festival, and then visit the famous ‘Merry Cemetery’ of Sapanta, with its pretty wooden crosses. And watch craftspeople at work, from bakers to blacksmiths and cheesemakers, allowing for some fantastic up-close shots.
Your group will be accompanied throughout by an experienced photographer-guide. As well as acting as a bridge to communities where English may not be widely spoken, allowing you to learn about traditional Romanian culture, they will also be on hand with tips on technique and composition if you’d like them. Free evenings will often be spent reviewing your shots, with constructive feedback from group members another asset in improving your skills.
This tour is a round-trip from Cluj-Napoca, focusing mostly on the Maramures and Transylvania regions as well as an overnight stay in the Apuseni Mountains where you can enjoy some landscape photography opportunities. The itinerary has been arranged to ensure you visit only places where photographers are welcome, so you can expect to come home with hours of happy editing ahead of you!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Difficult, it was all memorable. The coppersmiths, the sheep milkers, the blacksmith, the stunning sunrise shots, and the wildflower meadows.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
The food portions are vast, be prepared to share to make room for dinner. We were incredibly well catered for as vegetarians too.
My husband took a 'decent' canon camera, I had a small compact and the others on the trip had more elaborate equipment, but we were all made equally welcome and we all took photos that we were pleased with.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, the guesthouses were lovely and the staff were exceptionally friendly. We ate in local establishments and visited local people going about their daily lives.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Exceptional. Daniel worked extremely hard, he seemed to be on call 24/7 and included anything the group specifically wanted to see, even if it wasn't strictly on the itinerary. We didn't have time for any reviews in Romania so Daniel was happy to fix up a zoom after we arrived home.

- We assist in maintaining the Romanian heritage by various means. For example, we chose hotels located in traditional or historic buildings in Sibiu and Viscri. Recently renovated, they also maintain the features of old Saxon houses, such as the tall ceiling and the eye-roof. In fact, the interior is painted in a particular style too.- We travel in small groups, usually consisting of 3-6 people, thus minimising the impact on society and nature. As photographers, we are not intruding into the lives of people, we are simple observers and we are respectful of all nature, people and places that we encounter along the way. We can easily blend into local communities by traveling in small groups
- Every participant is advised on ways to reduce water, energy and waste usage. For example, we provide the participants with one water bottle on the first day of the tour, after which we continuously refill it, thus reducing the use of plastic bottles
- The itineray is designed so as to reduce the number of kilometres driven. We encourage tourists to walk in villages and towns, instead of using the car
- for 7 nights we will stay at rural guesthouses and most food they provide is seasonal and from local sources
People
- The meals included are at rural guesthouses where food is cooked from local ingredients or in locally-owned restaurants- We support locals and artisans who maintain traditional customs and occupations. We encourage them to continue their work during our visit and the guide will pay for their time by giving them money or buying goods. During this tour we will visit a coppersmith family, a blacksmith and a sheepfold.
- All suppliers are local so part of the income stays with them and jobs are enabled
- All the staff responsible for tour preparation, as well as the guide, are local. They are extremely knowledgeable and well-prepared and, as a result, we ensure they are properly remunerated. They are encouraged regularly to engage in cultural events and training courses, as well as to travel around Romania to get to know the country better.
