Reviews
1 Reviews of Avignon walking holiday in France
4 out of 5 stars
Reviewed on 20 Oct 2024 by Doris Chung Lee Tan
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The scenic landscapes and great views
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Bring a walking pole. You will need it. Also, the weather in October was colder and wetter than expected so bring sufficient warm clothes
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We stayed in a family-run hotel and had our meals in local restaurants. As a
walking holiday, hopefully, there was no impact on the environment
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
The walks were good and not as difficult as I had anticipated. Steep
climbs were gradual. However, a couple of downhill stretches were tricky due to very rocky paths and loose gravel. But overall, I found the
walking holiday enjoyable. The same thing cannot be said about the food,
though, as the cuisine in Alsace is heavily centred around meat
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Although the water in France is safe to drink for our customers, we offer the opportunity to purchase a water filter bottle, at a discounted price, that combines three different technologies to remove over 99.9% of all microbiological contaminants in water. This allows our clients to fill up from local streams and wells while on walks, as well as prevents the need for single use plastic bottlesWe operate a ‘leave no trace’ policy on all activity days to help maintain them for future generations. Our tour leader is trained to promote this message to our customers whilst on this trip. Lunches can be purchased from local shops/bakeries and you are encouraged to bring a water bottle, Tupperware container and cutlery to avoid using a plastic bags and plastic knives and forks.
The focus of this trip is primarily walking, however there will be some free time to walk additional trails and we aim to leave minimal impact. This includes sticking to the trails to avoid upsetting the delicate balance for plants and animals, as well as not feeding wildlife as they become reliant on tourists, plus maintaining a safe and respectful distance from wildlife.
From our base at Avignon, we are able to use local buses and train services on most days, which keeps costs down as well as avoiding using coaches for all the holiday.
People
This tour operates during some of the quieter months of the summer season for visitors and in areas typically away from the main tourist resorts. It helps to extend the season and reduce the decline in visitor numbers outside of the peak summer months when tourism drops off.It is important for us that we work with locals to ensure they benefit from tourism and stay at a family owned and operated hotel that employ local residents as well as work with local transport providers that hire staff locally. We buy picnic lunches from local shops and stop in mountain huts and small villages for drink breaks during the day.
We ensure that our staff are equipped with suitable footwear and clothing to cater for the environment in which they are working on.
We offer millions of pounds in financial aid to walking groups within the UK to maintain walking by young and old for future generations, rebuild broken paths and bridges washed away. This falls under an organisation named the Charitable Trust.
