Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

We recommend low carbon transport and make the journey as stimulating and sustainable as the stay. Where possible we choose to travel by land rather than air. By minimizing the use of flights on our trips, we are making journeys more stimulating and more sustainable for travellers. This trip down Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast does not include any flights, providing all transport by private vehicle and public ferry. We ensure our vehicles are fuel-efficient and well maintained with regular servicing. We use vehicles that are an appropriate size to suit the group size. Public ferries are a great way to travel between Croatia’s many islands – a scenic journey, travelling like locals do, and a lower environmental impact.

We continue to search out activities that are suitable for our travellers, while also finding suppliers that are making concerted efforts to reduce their environmental impact. This trip includes a fishing day trip on Lastovo Island, an island rarely visited by tourists and still home to many locals with a long history of earning a living by fishing. To reduce the impact of over fishing the waters surrounding the island, local people take visitors out for a day on the water. They can show off the beauty of the island, explain their way of life and how their natural resources have been depleted over the years. They also cast a short amount of net, catching enough fish to feed their guests a delicious fresh seafood lunch. By hosting tourists on this experience, locals can earn the same income as they did through fishing, while lowering their environmental impact.

People

Our trips maximize the opportunity for travellers to engage meaningfully with local culture and communities. Many experiences on our trips also support traditional cultural practices – whether artisanal, culinary or otherwise. In turn, this helps to sustain and preserve these traditional practices so that future generations may continue to learn, enjoy and benefit from them. This trip includes a visit to a family-owned winery on Croatia’s Peljesac Peninsula. Travellers will sample the family’s special varieties of red wine, made from plavac mali grapes, and olive oils. To accompany these samples are locally-produced hams and cheeses.

We go direct to the source for many of the inclusions on our trips. Locally-owned accommodation, transport providers, activity suppliers. This ensures that income from tourism is directly benefitting local communities everywhere we go. All aspects of this trip (on the ground) are operated by Croatians. This includes our leaders, vehicle drivers, local site guides, and accommodation providers.
