CARBON REDUCTION

Efforts to Reduce Flying
This itinerary is designed as a fully overland journey between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, with no internal flights included. By avoiding domestic aviation and travelling entirely by road, the trip significantly reduces operational carbon emissions within the destination.

Shared Local Transport
All transport is provided in a shared air-conditioned minibus with a maximum group size of 12 travellers. This small-group model ensures efficient use of fuel and reduces emissions per person compared to independent travel or multiple vehicles.

Human Powered Transport
The itinerary includes several low-impact, human-powered activities. These include canoeing along the Touw River in Wilderness National Park and short hikes (including a 2km hike to a waterfall and walking in Tsitsikamma National Park). These activities minimise reliance on motorised transport and allow for low-impact exploration of natural areas.

Advice to Reduce Carbon Impact
Travellers are encouraged to consider the carbon emissions of their international flights, with guidance to use tools such as Google Flights or Skyscanner to compare emissions and choose lower-impact options. The tour also promotes reducing energy use during stays (e.g. switching off lights, conserving water).

Reduction of Single-Use Plastics
The tour promotes the use of reusable Water-to-Go filtration bottles, which eliminate the need for single-use plastic water bottles. Each bottle can replace hundreds of disposable bottles, significantly reducing plastic waste associated with travel.


ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

Direct Support for Protected Areas
The itinerary includes entry to key protected areas such as Wilderness National Park, Tsitsikamma National Park, and Addo Elephant National Park. Entrance fees contribute directly to the conservation, maintenance, and protection of these biodiverse ecosystems.

Wildlife Conservation and Education
Wildlife experiences are centred around natural habitats, including viewing endangered African penguins at Betties Bay and a safari in Addo Elephant National Park. Addo is a significant conservation success story, having protected and rebuilt elephant populations from near extinction, and now supports a wide range of species within a managed sanctuary.

Low-Impact Nature Immersion
Activities such as canoeing, hiking, and exploring on foot are designed to minimise disturbance to wildlife and habitats while fostering a stronger appreciation for biodiversity and natural landscapes.

Clear guidance is provided to travellers on how to reduce their environmental impact. This includes avoiding littering, reducing waste, using biodegradable products, conserving water, and respecting local ecosystems. Travellers are also encouraged to remove unnecessary packaging and take responsibility for their waste where local systems may be limited.

Accommodation throughout the tour is based in backpacker lodges, guesthouses, and small boutique-style hotels chosen for their local character, service, and atmosphere. These smaller-scale properties help ensure that tourism revenue remains within local communities.

The itinerary includes visits to local wineries along Route 62, an ostrich farm in the Klein Karoo, and time in towns such as Hermanus and Knysna where travellers can engage with local markets, shops, and restaurants. Optional activities are operated by independent local providers, further extending economic benefits.

Guides and crew are paid at or above industry standards. Tipping is not compulsory but offered as a discretionary way for travellers to reward excellent service, ensuring fair and transparent compensation practices.

Accessibilty
Due to the active and group nature of the tour, we have a minimum age of 14 and a maximum age of 65. Exceptions to the upper age limit may be considered if you are reasonably fit, able to walk for at least 3 hours, participate in the included activities, and carry your own luggage.
