During this trip, guests stay at Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, which operates on renewable energy through the use of solar power. Solar energy provides electricity for lighting, charging, and heating water without releasing greenhouse gases. On day three, the itinerary includes a community walk, where guests travel on foot rather than by vehicle. Walking allows for direct interaction with residents and reduces reliance on fuel powered transport, lowering emissions and minimizing noise pollution.

Environment and Wildlife: Nkuringo Lodge also practices rainwater harvesting, collecting water from rooftops into tanks for use in non potable applications. This reduces the need for energy intensive pumping and treatment processes. To limit single use plastics, the lodge provides water in jars and encourages guests to bring refillable bottles. Gorilla trekking permits cost USD 800 per person, and part of this fee is allocated to pay guides, supporting their livelihoods and families.

People

Local Economy. The trip includes a visit to the Batwa community, where guests learn about traditional ways of life and cultural practices. Women demonstrate family rituals such as cooking and childcare, and cultural dances are performed with guest participation. The tour lasts about four hours and costs USD 80 per person. A portion of this fee is retained by the Uganda Wildlife Authority to fund Batwa development projects, such as school construction, while the remainder goes directly to guides to support their families.

Employment, Inclusivity and Diversity: Most of the staff employed at the lodge and throughout the trip are Ugandans, many from local communities. Their knowledge of the environment, language, and customs enhances the visitor experience and ensures smooth communication. At Nkuringo Lodge, women are trained in skills such as sewing and weaving, which help build confidence and generate income. Their products are promoted through the lodge’s gift shop, and travellers are encouraged to support these initiatives through donations or volunteering with the Gorilla Junction Foundation.
