CARBON REDUCTION

While on this trip, we use Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge and it uses renewable energy through its initiatives like the use of solar energy which is a renewable and clean source of energy. It harnesses the power of the sun and converts it into electricity without producing any green house gas emissions.

This trip supports human powered transport as it entails a community visit on day 3. On this day, the guests will walk to the community, get an opportunity for social interaction and community engagement fostering a sense of connectedness which could not have happened if the clients were passing through the community while driving. This whole experience contributes to improved air quality, reduced noise pollution and a lower carbon footprint therefore promoting sustainability.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

Nkuringo carries out rainwater harvesting which reduces the need for energy intensive water pumping and treatment processes. Harvested water being naturally soft and devoid of most pollutants, requires less treatment compared to ground water or surface water sources. By using rain water for various non potable applications, energy consumption associated with water extraction, treatment and distribution is reduced, leading to lower green house emissions and environmental impacts.

In order to reduce on use of plastic in the Lodge, Nkuringo provides water in Jars and encourages all clients to come with their water bottles that they can refill from the dinning.

Guests taking on this trip are required to pay for gorilla permits a fee of $800 per person. part of this money is used to pay the guides in order for then to sustain themselves and take care of their families.

LOCAL ECONOMY

While on this trip, we maximize other local economic activities by visiting the Batwa Community and this walk gives you an experience into the ancient ways of the Batwa people who once lived within the forest and also explore their ancient cultures. The women at the hut will demonstrate some family rituals like cooking, taking care of family and also perform a cultural dance, in which you'll be gracefully asked to participate.
This tour always takes 4 hours and costs US$80 per person per day. Part of the money that you pay is kept by Uganda Wildlife Authority to support Batwa Development projects like constructing schools while the other percentage is paid to the guides so that they can be able to support their families.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

The biggest percentage of people employed here and at the accommodation are from the Country. Local employees often have a deeper understanding of the local environment, attractions, and services. They offer personalized recommendations, provide valuable insights, and enhance the overall visitor experience. Their familiarity with the local language and customs also helps bridge communication gaps and create a welcoming atmosphere for tourists.

At Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge the women are empowered with neating, sewing skills and knowledge to uplift their self-confidence and family wealth. Nkuringo promotes their products through their gifts shop at the lodge and encourages travelers to donate and volunteer with the group through their Gorilla Junction Foundation.
