Our Rafting Expedition – Tara River (5 Days) is designed to minimise operational carbon emissions by prioritising low-impact travel and sustainable practices. The core activity—multi-day rafting through one of Europe’s deepest and most pristine canyons—uses human-powered craft for the majority of the journey, which dramatically reduces reliance on motorised transport. Shared minibuses are used for group transfers between the airport, Durmitor region, and rafting start points, lowering per-person CO2 emissions compared with private transfers. Where possible, we integrate electric vehicles for short in-area transfers to further reduce emissions. All meals are prepared with locally sourced and seasonal ingredients, offering daily vegetarian and vegan options to reduce food-related carbon impact. We actively guide guests on ways to reduce their carbon footprint—advising on direct flight choices, low-impact packing, and responsible behaviours in the field—ensuring participants contribute to a lower-emission travel experience overall. Through these practices, the tour supports meaningful carbon reduction without relying on offset schemes, aligning with our ethos of reducing operational emissions at the source.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

This rafting expedition is set entirely within the UNESCO-protected Tara River Canyon, a globally significant wilderness and one of Europe’s last unpolluted river ecosystems. Entry fees for national park access are included in the trip, directly supporting conservation efforts and protected area management. Accommodations and riverside camps chosen for the itinerary employ a range of environmental practices, from energy-efficient operations and water conservation to reduced single-use plastics and responsible waste management. All equipment and logistics are handled with strict adherence to minimising disturbance to water quality and habitats. Our experienced local guides educate participants on Leave No Trace principles, biodiversity value, and river ecology, which builds guest understanding of how to travel respectfully and reduce impacts on wildlife. The itinerary also incorporates guided nature interpretation, helping travellers recognise and value key species and natural processes they encounter. By situating the tour in a biodiverse, protected landscape and combining education with conservation support, this trip contributes to nature preservation and increased environmental appreciation among participants.

Licensed local guides lead every segment of the rafting journey, bringing deep environmental and cultural knowledge, and their earnings directly support outdoor guiding careers in Montenegro. Villages and riverside camps visited during the expedition benefit from participant spending on services, goods, and crafts, which multiplies economic effects beyond just the trip itself. More than 90% of the staff involved in this expedition—guides, drivers, camp crews, and support personnel—are Montenegrin, many from communities adjacent to Durmitor National Park. All team members and subcontracted partners are paid at or above the national minimum wage, ensuring fair compensation and local economic stability. While rafting is a physically active tour, our guides are trained to support participants of varied fitness levels and adjust expectations so that guests feel included and comfortable. The tour is LGBTQ+ friendly and welcoming to diverse traveller identities. Recruitment and staffing practices are non-discriminatory, emphasizing equal opportunity irrespective of gender, race, nationality, or sexual orientation.
