Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

CARBON REDUCTION
Volunteer accommodation adopts energy-efficient practices such as using LED lighting, water-saving fixtures, and eco-friendly appliances, while also maintaining robust recycling systems to minimise waste sent to landfills. Volunteers are strongly encouraged to choose sustainable transportation methods like walking, cycling, or using public transport instead of private cars, which significantly reduces carbon emissions and promotes a lower-impact lifestyle. Participants receive comprehensive guidance on responsible and sustainable living, including practical tips for conserving water and electricity, reducing plastic use, opting for reusable products, and practicing proper waste sorting and recycling. These efforts ensure that daily routines and volunteer activities align with the broader goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting the planet’s resources for future generations.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
This project directly contributes to conserving Portugal’s beautiful coastal habitats by engaging volunteers in essential activities such as removing harmful plastic waste from beaches, monitoring marine ecosystems for signs of stress or degradation, and promoting environmental education within the community. The surf school operates with sustainability in mind, carefully managing surf activities to avoid damaging fragile coastal zones and marine life. Accommodation facilities actively support eco-friendly practices, incorporating recycling, sustainable materials, and prioritising locally sourced food to reduce transportation emissions and support the regional economy. Volunteers play an essential role in these conservation efforts, helping to protect biodiversity, preserve marine environments, and raise awareness about the importance of safeguarding Portugal’s coastal ecosystems for both wildlife and local communities.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY, EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY

Volunteers stay in locally operated accommodation, helping to support small businesses and ensure that tourism revenue benefits the surrounding community directly, strengthening the local economy and promoting sustainable development. The surf school partners closely with local communities to provide inclusive surf experiences, making it possible for people of all ages and abilities, including those with disabilities, to safely enjoy the ocean and connect with nature. All staff members and surf instructors are Portuguese, which fosters genuine cultural connections and allows volunteers to learn firsthand about local traditions, values, and ways of life.

Volunteers engage meaningfully with community members by participating in both surf sessions and environmental initiatives, helping to build social inclusion through sports and shared action to protect natural resources. Pre-departure training covers important Portuguese customs, cultural etiquette, and basic language skills to help volunteers interact respectfully and confidently. This unique project blends the excitement of surfing with sustainability efforts and social impact work, creating an unforgettable and enriching experience along Portugal’s stunning northern coastline, where participants contribute positively to both people and the environment.
