Responsible Travel

CARBON REDUCTION
Our trip is designed with a strong focus on minimizing carbon emissions and reducing environmental impact. The accommodations used throughout the journey rely on low-impact infrastructure, drawing energy from renewable sources such as solar panels or hydropower. Water is sourced responsibly from local springs and, where possible, through rainwater collection systems. To reduce transportation emissions, guests are encouraged to use our shared transport options, including collective buses that significantly lower the trip’s carbon footprint. Once on the trail, most of the programme is completed entirely on foot, supporting a slow-travel approach that keeps emissions to a minimum. We further reduce our indirect impact by sourcing food locally and seasonally, helping shorten supply chains while supporting regional producers. Vegetarian and vegan meal options are also available, offering more climate-friendly choices for all participants.

ENVIRONMENT & WILDLIFE
This experience contributes directly to the protection of the Carpathian environment and its biodiversity. The trip includes an entry fee to Piatra Craiului National Park, supporting the long-term management of this protected area. In addition, part of the trip cost helps fund the work of Foundation Conservation Carpathia, whose initiatives include habitat restoration, reforestation of clear-cut areas, and wildlife reintroduction projects involving species such as bison, beavers, and vultures. Their efforts also extend to continuous wildlife monitoring and ecological research. All treks are led by local guides who have completed training through our Guiding Academy, equipping them with strong expertise in nature interpretation and wildlife conservation. The Foundation also engages in educational campaigns on invasive species, such as Japanese knotweed, and organizes community-based removal actions to protect native habitats. Through these combined efforts, the trip actively supports the preservation and regeneration of the Carpathian ecosystem.

LOCAL ECONOMY
Our trip is designed to generate meaningful economic benefits for the communities surrounding the Fagara? Mountains. All accommodations used during the programme are locally owned, ensuring that financial value stays within the region. By working closely with local partners, approximately 70% of all revenue generated by the trip flows back into nearby communities through essential services such as cleaning, transportation, and guiding. This approach creates a positive economic ripple effect, supporting small businesses and local families who form the backbone of the tourism ecosystem. Around 70% of the food served on the trip is sourced from local producers, providing guests with fresh, seasonal ingredients while reinforcing regional agricultural networks. In addition, the itinerary includes visits to local craftspeople, offering guests the chance to support artisans directly and contribute to the preservation of traditional skills and livelihoods. By prioritizing local supply chains and cultural heritage, the trip helps cultivate a more resilient and sustainable rural economy.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY, AND DIVERSITY
Our commitment to sustainability extends to how we employ, support, and empower people. An estimated 95% of our employees are from Romania, with more than 40% coming directly from the surrounding local communities. This ensures that jobs created by tourism provide opportunities for residents and contribute to local prosperity. All staff are paid at least a wage that supports a decent standard of living, and they receive additional benefits such as private health insurance and the necessary equipment to perform their work safely and effectively. We are proud to foster an inclusive environment: the trip is LGBTQ+ friendly, and our employment practices actively promote equal opportunities for all candidates, regardless of nationality, race, gender, or sexual orientation. This inclusive and fair approach helps build a diverse workforce that reflects our values and enhances the overall experience for guests and staff alike.
