Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

CARBON REDUCTION
We are committed to offering low-impact holidays, which benefit the countries and communities we visit, as well as our travellers and the natural environment. We believe in the transformative power of travel and aim to minimise our ecological footprint by selecting eco-friendly accommodations, encouraging waste reduction, and supporting sustainable transportation options where possible.

This walking tour offers a low-carbon way to explore, with many routes starting from your base in Lerwick and a strong focus on travelling by foot. Journeys further afield rely on ferries and public transport, reducing environmental impact while supporting local services and preserving the Shetland Islands’ unspoilt landscapes and wildlife.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
We operate a ‘leave no trace’ policy in national parks, archaeological sites, monuments, and other sensitive areas like beaches and coastlines; these should be treated with the ultimate respect to maintain them for future generations. Our tour leaders are trained to promote this message to our customers during the holiday.

This walking holiday offers a low-impact way to explore the Shetland Islands' wild landscapes, with most journeys taken on foot and supplemented by shared local transport such as buses and ferries, to reduce environmental impact.

LOCAL ECONOMY
We provide ample opportunities to explore the local area on foot, where you can shop for local wares and crafts and immerse yourselves in the destination's rich cultural heritage. To enhance your experience, your tour leader will be joined by a knowledgeable, well-qualified local guide for the duration of the trip.

By relying on local services and infrastructure, this walking trip supports the island economy, helping sustain small communities while preserving the natural beauty that makes the Shetland Islands so special.

The Lerwick Hotel supports the local economy and a lower-impact food approach by using locally sourced Shetland produce in its restaurant where possible, helping reduce food miles and support regional suppliers. Both vegetarian and vegan options are available for breakfast and dinner. The hotel’s restaurant typically offers at least one vegan option, and staff can cater to dietary requirements with advance notice.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY & DIVERSITY
We are committed to responsible and sustainable travel practices that support both the local environment and surrounding communities. By selecting environmentally conscious accommodation, encouraging reduced waste, and prioritising sustainable transport where possible, we aim to minimise our footprint. Through respectful engagement and conscious travel choices, we strive to protect natural landscapes while delivering enriching and memorable experiences.
