We reckon this is one of the world’s most exciting holiday destinations.
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
CARBON REDUCTIONWe are committed to offering low-impact holidays, which benefit the countries and communities we visit, as well as our travellers and the natural environment. We believe in the transformative power of travel and aim to minimise our ecological footprint by selecting eco-friendly accommodations, encouraging waste reduction, and supporting sustainable transportation options where possible.
Daily hotel breakfasts are included, with a mix of included dinners and lunches depending on the itinerary, plus flexibility to dine independently on other evenings. This works well for vegan and vegetarian travellers, as it allows the freedom to choose from local cafés and restaurants, where plant-based options are increasingly available in New Zealand, or to opt for simple picnic-style lunches using local produce along our spectacular hikes.
When taking reservations for groups in local restaurants, it is the policy of some restaurateurs to offer one set menu, served to everyone at the table (with the exception of vegetarians, vegans, and gluten-free options). Vegetarian and vegan options are often available, though menus may vary by location, so we recommend checking and letting us know in advance to ensure dietary requirements can be accommodated.
This New Zealand walking holiday has a relatively low carbon impact once in destination, with travel focused on walking, ferry crossings, and coach journeys rather than internal flights, allowing you to experience the country more slowly and sustainably.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
We operate a ‘leave no trace’ policy in national parks, archaeological sites, monuments, and other sensitive areas like beaches and coastlines; these should be treated with the ultimate respect to maintain them for future generations. Our tour leaders are trained to promote this message to our customers during the holiday.
By exploring on foot through places like Rotorua, Milford Sound, and Aoraki/Mount Cook, you will have the chance to engage more deeply with the landscapes while minimising environmental impact within the islands. The tour is also environmentally conscious with an emphasis on national parks and protected landscapes, encouraging appreciation of New Zealand’s natural heritage.
People
LOCAL ECONOMYWe provide ample opportunities to explore the local area on foot, where you can shop for local wares and crafts and immerse yourselves in the destination's rich cultural heritage. To enhance your experience, your tour leader will be joined by a knowledgeable, well-qualified local guide for the duration of the trip. Extensive travel on the islands helps to support the local economy through stays in regional towns, visits to vineyards, and spending money in local communities along the route.
We believe that the best things come in small packages and limit our groups to a maximum of 18 persons, plus the tour Leader, so that everyone has the opportunity to mix, share their love of travel, and return home with new friendships. Small groups also have less detrimental local impact, allowing us to use public transport on some days and eat at small local restaurants, which offers a better overall experience.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY & DIVERSITY
We are committed to responsible and sustainable travel practices that support both the local environment and surrounding communities. By selecting environmentally conscious accommodation, encouraging reduced waste, and prioritising sustainable transport where possible, we aim to minimise our footprint. Through respectful engagement and conscious travel choices, we strive to protect natural landscapes while delivering enriching and memorable experiences.
