Seeing the lava flowing at the Masaya volcano is a wow! (45 mins from Managua/Nicaragua); zip lining above the tree tops at Arenal. Watching the beautiful sunset, glass of wine in hand, at Arenal Observatory Lodge. Seeing Quetzals close up in the cloud forest. Hundreds of fireflies lighting up and dancing in front if us as the sun set. Seeing all the wonderful wildlife on offer in Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

The very best moment was kayaking in Tortuguero: just four of us and a guide exploring the rainforest by river at dawn. The cries of the howler monkeys echoed across the morning mist, and we got up close to crocodiles, turtles and incredible water birds. Priceless!

On an early morning bird-watching trail with a local guide, we were lucky enough to see 5 of these beautiful birds... feeding on wild avocados. We sat for an hour as the sun began to rise, driving away the cold night air as the clouds rolled up the forested mountain side. Quite amazing. (more)Paul Smith

The stay at Cerro Escondido. It was not touristy, the hike there was great, and the managers were very welcoming. A beautiful, peaceful spot, off the beaten track.
Tips?
If you go to Tortuguero, go for as good a lodge as you can afford. We felt our guide was not as good as the one from the other lodge. Don't just stick to the well known bits, get off the beaten track a bit to experience the real Costa Rica.

I would recommend that you should not spent too much time travelling but spend a few extra days at a good base. Travelling in Costa Rica, despite the relatively good roads, is not quick and can be quite a challenge. Costa Rica is also very expensive for everything!
