The best time to go to Mallorca is in summer. The tourism season runs from May to October on the island and the most popular time for visitors is July and August. Outside of these two months, it’s quieter with good weather. In winter, lots of the island’s hotels close for the season, and it’s cooler and a bit wetter. Mallorca has hot summers and mild, but windy and wet winters – a classic example of a Mediterranean maritime climate. In the 19th century, its capital, Palma de Mallorca, was considered a great winter resort, but now the crowds are here in summer. The vast majority of visitors come in July and August for a resort-style break on the beach, when the average daily high is 29°C and the sea temperature is between 25-26°C. If you’re looking to go walking then outside this hot, busy season is best, in May, June, September and October. Plus, the sea will still be warm well into autumn.

When to go to Mallorca, month by month

Hotels batten down the hatches and do repairs in the winter months, and there are some storms. Winter rain is common, especially in January, a very quiet month to visit. It’s also orange and lemon picking season.

February sees the start of the almond blossom, and early signs of spring.

Walking tours start in March with the beginning of spring. Easter falls in March or April. Holy Week is a busy time of processions and rituals – and bakeries make special pastries.

In sunny May, Port Soller hosts a battle reenactment on the water, and then through the streets of town, recreating the 1561 pirate invasion successfully deterred by Soller’s inhabitants.

June in Mallorca is the start of festival season – music festivals run in the summer in different towns. The festivities of St Joan (St John the Baptist) at the end of June are the biggest – spread from neighbouring Menorca.

July and August are the hottest months in Mallorca and the beaches are rammed, as is Palma. The sea is at its warmest in August.

September is lovely, quieter and sunny, with a warm sea. October is quieter still, wetter, but still great for walking.

By November the tourist season is over and resort areas like Magaluf and Arenal empty out completely. November is the rainiest month in Mallorca, especially in the Tramuntana Mountains.

December is mild and frost-free, except in the mountains. Palma was a famed winter resort, leafy with orange and palm trees, so whilst winter is sometimes wet, it beats northern Europe. Yes it’s quiet, with not many tourism facilities open, but it’s also the right season for hot chocolate and churros.
