Our small group safaris

Our small group safari holidays are a great option for many people, but are especially popular with solo travellers. You’ll explore in the company of like-minded wildlife enthusiasts, and bond over extraordinary sightings or activities like Maasai tribal ceremonies and wilderness camping, as well as sundowners around the campfire. Our expert group leaders come into their own on these trips, too, managing all of the logistics so that you can just relax and enjoy the experience. And for that reason, our small group safaris can also be ideal for families and mixed-generation groups travelling together.

Highlights of our small group safaris

What to expect

Our small group safaris are very convenient for solo travellers, but can suit couples and friends just as much. They’re economical, as you’re sharing many of the costs, and they’re also stress-free with all the driving and logistics handled for you. Group sizes tend to be a maximum of around 16, though you may get a few more than that on an overland tour. By the end of a week you’ll be a tightly knit gang, so if the social side of things is important to you on holiday, then a trip like this can be the right fit.

And key to the success of any small group safari is the tour leader. Often, though not always, a local, they are on hand throughout to ensure that the trip goes smoothly, as well as providing an entertaining and informative commentary as you go. They’ll make the introductions in Maasai villages, identify the animal off in the distance, adapt the route if there is the promise of a rare wildlife sighting and if necessary, deal with unexpected punctures, too.

Our top small group safaris

There’s a very clear stand-out destination when it comes to our top small group safaris: Botswana. This is one of Africa’s last remaining true wildernesses, teeming with biodiversity, and offering some very special safari experiences from wild camping to canoe tours on the Okavango Delta. You can easily pair it with neighbouring Namibia as well, which offers an interesting contrast.

Elsewhere on our list of top small group safaris you’ll find classic destinations like the Maasai Mara, Zambia and South Africa, but also some more off-the-beaten-track options. Explore Madagascar and Mozambique with confidence in an escorted tour, or enjoy an unforgettable encounter with the mountain gorillas of Uganda, which you can also combine with a traditional safari in Kenya.

Too many to single out, but the rhino tracking on foot at Matobo, plus night time elephant visits to our campsite waterholes at Hwange and Elephant Sands were highlights for me. A great holiday lead by two excellent tour leaders (Wayne and Tabani). The itinerary was quite varied with each place having it's own unique charm. I would happily recommend this trip.read more

Can I give more than 5 stars? It was phenomenal! The only thing I would have changed is to stay longer. There were so many memorable parts of my visit to Uganda! It was packed with exciting and enriching experiences. The close encounters - dare I say, connection -with the mountain gorillas and chimpanzees, as well as the deeply personal and moving visit to the Batwa community were among the most impactful. I was also thrilled and delighted by the golden monkeys. The itinerary was thoughtfully assembled...read more
