Description of Walking and wine tasting holiday in Spain and Portugal
This lovely tour takes you from the Ribera del Duero region of Spain to the Douro winelands of Portugal – experience the changing of the wines as you move from terroir to terroir, town to town, enjoying some pleasant walks in the changing landscape along the way.
This holiday takes you to some of the loveliest cities on the Iberian Peninsula – including historic Segovia with its amazing, ancient aqueduct and medieval Alcazar, Madrid with its art galleries, and pretty Porto on the coast. It also takes you off the beaten track, to small towns like Fermoselle in Zamora where you can explore underground bodegas and taste the local wines.
A highlight on this trip will be exploring the Douro Valley – and you can take a local train along the Douro River for part of its length, enjoying the scenery of northern Portugal along the way before stopping for winery visits.
Expect leisurely walking on this holiday; you’ll hike in scenic places like Guadarrama National Park in Spain, where the mountainous landscapes are a haven for griffon vultures, and in Duraton River Gorges Natural Park, where the river has carved deep gorges in the limestone. Walking distances range from 6km to 11km on the four days where you’re out on the trails.
Add a night or two onto the start or end of your holiday if you want to spend more time in Madrid. Or Porto – after all, there are a lot of port houses to visit.

The walks in the beautiful mediteranean landscapes of Spanish national parks
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Think about food in advance, as meals are not included in this trip and when you have walked 3 hours in the morning, you go back to your hotel in the countryside, nothing to eat but traditional late lunch or the sandwich you made for yourself at breakfast !
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Not really. Benefit people, maybe, as as tourists we are much better off than the local s are both in Portugal and Spain

Very good, if you enjoy walking, wines and discovering local history

The whole package - very well thought out itinerary. Delivered walks, wine, and site-seeing.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
You're on the go. Walk pace leisurely but ground can be rocky/loose underfoot.
Be prepared for most commercial operations to close in the afternoon, with dinner unlikely to be offered before 20:00.

Yes, in the sense of smaller local hotels, restaurants etc. being used.

Excellent.

To help leave a lower carbon footprint we travel overland from Spain into Portugal using local bus providers and public transport where we can, including taking the train along the Duero valley between Pocinhos and Peso da Regua. We also take walking tours in Madrid and Porto so as to see the sights without the use of a vehicle.The tap water is both safe to drink and clean in Spain and Portugal and we encourage clients to take a reusable water bottle to fill up, rather than generating plastic bottle waste.

People
As we travel through the Ribera de Deruro wine region we visit of variety of bodegas - local wine producers with shops selling their wine. This provides the group with an insight into different wine making techniques from the producers themselves and the opportunity to taste different wines of the region. Along the way we also try local food, including Spanish tapas and a visit to a small farmhouse for homemade cheese.We visit and stay in small villages which are often away from the main tourist routes, this helps to provide income to more rural communities, keeping traditions going and spreads the economic benefits of our visit across the countries we journey through.
As a company we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of the UK travel industry body AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.
