Posada San Marcos serves as the single-centre base for this 7-night walking holiday, ensuring guests stay in one highly efficient location without moving between hotels. The property operates entirely on 100% renewable electricity. Over 50% of its power is generated directly on-site via 40 rooftop photovoltaic (PV) panels, with the remainder imported through guaranteed 100% green energy suppliers. Heating, cooling, and hot water are powered by a ground-source geothermal energy system—the first of its kind installed in Andalucía—slashing operational energy consumption by over 75% compared to conventional systems.

We actively encourage our guests to minimize their travel footprint by choosing low-carbon transport options where possible. Spain's high-speed AVE train network connects seamlessly to Sevilla Santa Justa station from major transport hubs across Spain and Europe. From the station, guests can easily take a direct local bus into the Sierra de Aracena or arrange an EV pick-up with us. For guests arriving by air, we provide detailed guidance in our pre-trip packs on calculating flight emissions via Google Flights or Atmosfair, and advise on purchasing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) top-ups directly through major airlines (such as British Airways or KLM) to lower lifecycle flight emissions by over 65%.

This is primarily a human-powered walking holiday where guest itineraries focus on foot-based exploration directly from the front door into the surrounding natural park, eliminating the need for daily vehicular transport. For essential local transfers and guest arrivals/departures to and from Sevilla, we use our own 100% electric vehicle (EV), charged directly on-site using our solar energy system.

All meals provided during the holiday rely heavily on zero-km and hyper-local sourcing within a 125 km radius—including organic walnuts from our neighbour, local honey, artisan bread, and Sierra-grown produce. Vegetarian and vegan food options are readily available every day, cooked on high-efficiency induction hobs (which convert 85% of energy directly to heat). Kitchen scraps and coffee grounds are converted into garden compost on-site.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

Posada San Marcos was the first accommodation provider in Andalucía to achieve the official EU Ecolabel (awarded February 2020), which requires rigorous third-party auditing of water conservation, chemical reduction, waste management, and building materials. The property features extensive rainwater harvesting and well-water recovery systems that feed toilet cisterns and garden drip irrigation. Building insulation relies entirely on natural, sustainably harvested local materials including regional cork oak (Quercus suber) and natural lamb's wool.

The holiday takes guests directly through the protected Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park, where public access to the trail network is entirely free. To actively restore biodiversity, the property replaced thirsty lawn areas with native dry-garden species, Mediterranean herbs, and pollinator-friendly plants. In 2020, three natural bio-filter ponds were constructed on-site to treat laundry greywater naturally; these now serve as a thriving habitat for local frogs, newts, and dragonflies. Zero synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilizers are used on the grounds.

Guests are accompanied on a guided walk by host Ángel, a local expert who also leads three dedicated regional experiences throughout the stay. He shares deep local knowledge of the area's history, flora, fauna, and traditional practices, ensuring guests build a meaningful connection with the environment.

To help protect our delicate ecosystem, we detail the countryside code in the room guide provided in every bedroom. This includes clear advice for walkers to stick strictly to marked paths to prevent the spread of invasive species and soil-borne pathogens—such as Phytophthora cinnamomi—which pose a severe threat to our native Holm and Cork oak forests. We also provide comprehensive information on leaving no trace while walking within the Natural Park and actively partner with the Lutra Association, a local environmental group dedicated to regional conservation and habitat protection, exchanging local walking routes for guest contributions directed to their conservation work.

LOCAL ECONOMY

Posada San Marcos is 100% locally owned and operated by us directly in the village of Alájar, ensuring that 100% of accommodation revenues remain within the local economy rather than going to international hotel chains. As a single-centre holiday, guests spend their entire stay embedded in our village community.

We actively create direct economic opportunities for our neighbours and local micro-entrepreneurs. All recommended excursions, tastings, and guided activities are run by local residents who have established small businesses around their craft and deep knowledge of the Sierra. Upon arrival, every guest receives a custom map detailing all independent village shops, artisanal bakeries, bars, and family-run restaurants, along with opening times and recommended regional dishes. To further support local establishments, we voluntarily translate and regularly update English menus for village taverns, encouraging guests to dine locally with confidence.

We prioritize hyper-local sourcing across all operations. We purchase surplus seasonal produce directly from village allotments, buy fresh eggs at fair market rates from our neighbour Abraham, and source regional produce, honey, and wood-fired bread from suppliers within a 125 km radius. Additionally, when the village published its official promotional pamphlet, we contributed financially to its printing and voluntarily provided the English translation to promote local tourism.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

We are committed to fair, ethical, and inclusive employment that directly sustains our rural community. 100% of our staff are Spanish nationals living in the local area, and our primary full-time employee was born and raised right here in Alájar. We pay all staff above the national minimum wage and invest directly in their professional development - sponsoring accredited qualifications in reception and professional housekeeping. Whenever additional support is needed during peak periods, we hire exclusively from within the village, and all garden, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry maintenance is contracted to local independent tradespeople.
