CARBON REDUCTION

This is a land-based tour, starting in Sucevita and travelling south to Bucharest, without the need for domestic flights or any back tracking on the itinerary.

While the mode of transport throughout the tour is by minibus there are a number of days where you are exploring on foot. These include a 10km walk through grassland and forest to the village of Runc; a 7km walk exploring the beauty of the Hasmas Mountains National Park and a 9km walk from the village of Magura to enjoy a picnic lunch in the Transylvanian countryside.

Our small groups tours have a maximum of 12 travellers.

ENVIROMENT AND WILDLIFE

We visit a number of national parks and UNESCO heritage sites on this tour.

A proportion of our entrance fees to Vânatori-Neamt Nature Park is used to support the reintroduction of European bison. The species, which was facing extinction, is being reintroduced to the area more than two centuries after its disappearance from the wild. All visits are accompanied by a park ranger with the emphasis being on increasing understanding and appreciation of Europe’s largest land mammal.

In Moldovita we visit the village’s Eastern Orthodox monastery, a UNESCO 16th century building that blends Byzantine and Gothic influences. We also visit the Saxon UNESCO village of Viscri and Voronet Monastery, another of Romania’s UNESCO treasures, which are being carefully preserved.

LOCAL ECONOMY

On this tour we visit a number of interesting workshops that support local artisans and the preservation of traditional craft, including a black ceramic workshop in Marginea Village, and witness the highly skilled tradition of egg painting while in the Moldovita Valley.

We will also enjoy a mountain escape within the Carpathian Mountains at the Casa cu Cerbi, which is a family-run farmhouse on a real Bucovina farm, where traditional design is preserved through the restored furniture and architecture, and homemade local dishes are prepared using ingredients sourced from the farm and the nearby market.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

Local hosts, guides, national park rangers and drivers are employed throughout the trip, offering not only employment opportunities, but a wealth of knowledge of Romania’s different regions and the country as a whole.

A donation of £10 is made on behalf of every traveller to our foundation, which helps supports education and community empowerment projects worldwide.
