CARBON REDUCTION

Once in Tanzania, efforts are made to limit the use of motorised transport for daily journeys. Volunteers are encouraged to use bikes for shorter journeys within the area where they volunteer, where practical.

The accommodation uses solar energy for electricity and for heating water. Waste is minimised where possible, with remaining waste taken to designated collection points.

Food is sourced locally and, where possible, from the accommodation grounds. Vegetables are mostly grown on site and picked by hand. Other provisions are sourced nearby, including beef from local markets and fish from local fishermen on Lake Victoria.

Travel to Tanzania generally requires flying, which contributes to the environmental impact of the trip. The focus during the stay is on encouraging specific practices, such as cycling for shorter journeys and using the facilities available locally.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

Volunteers support environmental awareness and conservation education by working with students on topics related to local wildlife, ecosystems and environmental practices. This provides opportunities for students to learn about their local environment and the importance of protecting it.

Accommodation used on the trip may have measures in place, including rainwater harvesting, recycling programmes and initiatives to minimise plastic use.

Where the trip includes entry fees to parks or protected areas, these fees may contribute to conservation activities and the management of those areas.
