CARBON REDUCTION

Once in Tanzania, efforts are made to reduce the environmental impact of daily travel. Volunteers are encouraged to use bikes for shorter journeys within the area where they volunteer to support the use of low impact transport.

The accommodation uses solar energy for electricity and for heating water. Waste is minimised where possible, with remaining waste taken to designated collection points.

Food is sourced locally and, where possible, from the accommodation grounds. Vegetables are mostly grown on site and picked by hand. Other provisions are sourced nearby, including beef from local markets and fish from local fishermen on Lake Victoria.

Travel to Tanzania does require flying, and this cannot be avoided. However, the focus of the trip is on reducing environmental impact on the ground rather than discouraging travel altogether.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

Volunteers support environmental awareness and conservation education by working with students on topics related to local wildlife, ecosystems, and sustainable practices. This helps encourage a sense of responsibility towards the natural environment.

Accommodation used on the trip often adopts practices to reduce environmental impact, including pollution reduction, rainwater harvesting, recycling programmes, and minimising plastic use.

Where the trip includes entry fees to parks or protected areas, these fees contribute directly to conservation efforts in those areas.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY

Our model is centred on ensuring that travel delivers clear and direct benefits to local communities.

Accommodation on this trip is locally owned. This allows visitors to experience Tanzanian hospitality and culture while ensuring that income generated by the trip remains within the local economy.

We employ local guides, visit craft and cooperative markets, and include village visits as part of the programme. We work with local artisans in Mwanza and cooperative markets in our district, supporting traditional crafts and strengthening local economic activity.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY, AND DIVERSITY

Local employment
One hundred percent of the people employed by us or our operating partners in Tanzania are Tanzanian, with a significant proportion coming from the local community. This helps ensure that the economic benefits of tourism are widely shared.

Inclusive employment opportunities
We create income generating opportunities for marginalised groups, including women, indigenous people, and people with disabilities. This includes working with women’s cooperatives in rural areas and supporting the renovation of government schools in our district.

Fair wages and staff welfare
All staff employed by us and our ground operating partners are paid at least the minimum wage. Where needed, we also cover health related expenses for staff and their families.

Diversity and equal opportunity
We have a workplace diversity strategy in place to support equal employment opportunities regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or nationality.

LGBTQ plus inclusion
We are LGBTQ plus friendly and aim to provide a welcoming and respectful environment for all travellers. However, we have to be transparent about the legal and cultural context, as being gay in Tanzania is illegal. We ensure travellers are informed about this and are properly advised before travelling.

Accessibility and mobility
The trip is not well suited for people with limited mobility, vision or hearing impairments, or cognitive challenges. We provide advice and assistance where possible so travellers can make informed decisions about suitability.
