Planet

CARBON REDUCTION
Volunteer accommodation uses solar power for electricity, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions from daily energy use. Volunteers travel to the youth centre by public transport or on foot, significantly lowering transportation-related carbon emissions compared to private vehicles. During orientation, volunteers receive practical advice on sustainable living, covering ways to save water and electricity, reduce single-use plastics, and choose locally sourced products that have a smaller carbon footprint. Volunteers are encouraged to avoid unnecessary printing, buy eco-friendly products, and minimise waste throughout their stay. These efforts ensure that the positive impacts of volunteering with young people are matched by eco-conscious choices that help protect Split’s environment, clean coastal waters, and beautiful natural landscapes for future generations.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
Although this project focuses on education, it includes environmental themes that contribute indirectly to conservation and sustainable tourism. Volunteers help deliver workshops for teenagers on topics such as recycling, protecting biodiversity, and reducing plastic pollution, helping the next generation value Croatia’s natural resources. Accommodation uses recycled furnishings and sources local food, cutting emissions linked to transportation and packaging waste. While not directly involved in wildlife conservation, the project’s sustainable practices promote environmental responsibility and help protect Split’s unique biodiversity. These efforts ensure that even a social-focused programme like youth education contributes to broader sustainability goals, creating long-term benefits for both the community and the natural environment.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY, EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY
Volunteers live in locally owned accommodation and support Split’s small businesses, ensuring that tourism income remains in the community and strengthens the local economy. The youth project is run entirely by Croatian professionals, creating employment opportunities for staff who design and deliver programmes, manage logistics, and facilitate cultural exchange. Volunteers work side by side with Croatian staff, gaining authentic insight into local traditions, language, and everyday life, fostering mutual respect and deeper cultural understanding. By leading English lessons, creative workshops, and recreational activities, volunteers help empower local teenagers, giving them essential life skills, confidence, and improved prospects for the future. The project fosters inclusivity by offering a safe, supportive environment where youth can express themselves, try new activities, and connect with positive role models. Volunteers play an essential role in bridging cultural gaps and strengthening community ties. All income generated and employment benefits stay local, contributing to sustainable tourism and leaving a lasting legacy in Split’s community.
