Carbon reduction

Travel to Nepal requires international and domestic flights. To reduce emissions where possible, the group travels together on the same scheduled domestic flight within Nepal, avoiding multiple transfers and repeated journeys. All ground transport during the retreat is shared, reducing per-person impact.

We provide guests with a conscious packing list designed to minimise waste, including guidance on reusable water bottles, low-impact clothing and personal items suited to mountain environments. Meals during the retreat are largely locally sourced and plant-forward, reducing food miles while supporting regional producers.

Rather than rushing between locations, the retreat is intentionally based in one hotel in Kathmandu and one mountain lodge, encouraging slower travel, fewer transport movements and deeper connection with place.

Environment and wildlife
The remote valleys of eastern Nepal are places of remarkable ecological and cultural significance. Our stay at the Sherpa lodge conserves the surrounding rhododendron forests and mountain habitats by working with landowners who prioritise low-impact land management and limit development footprint. We explore on foot or by bicycle wherever possible, reducing motorised travel and deepening connection with the natural rhythms of the region. Water from natural sources is used thoughtfully, and waste is managed with a preference for composting and recycling in lodges and villages.

People

Local economy and partnerships

This retreat has been co-created and delivered in partnership with Beyul Experiences, a Nepal-based, locally owned travel company rooted in the Solu and Phaplu regions. Beyul’s work is centred on growing tourism responsibly, ensuring that visitors engage respectfully with the sacred Himalayan valleys while supporting a healthy ecosystem of exchange between guests and local communities.

Beyul Experiences is actively involved in long-term social projects across healthcare, education, environmental awareness and youth development. For every booking at their mountain lodge, Happy House, one year of health insurance is provided for a local family. The lodge also hosts visiting doctors from Kathmandu who run mobile health camps in the region.

Through guest contributions and community initiatives, Beyul has helped raise over US $20,000 to fund clean-burning stoves for local families, alongside education campaigns addressing the dangers of indoor smoke, one of the leading health risks in the Himalayan region.

We also support the Phaplu Mountain Biking Club, a non-profit initiative run by Beyul that empowers young people in Phaplu and neighbouring villages through access to sport, mentorship and outdoor skills.

By working with a single, values-aligned local partner, and staying in just one city hotel and one mountain lodge, we aim to ensure that the economic benefits of this retreat remain within Nepal, supporting livelihoods, community resilience and locally led development.
