1 Reviews of Discover Transylvania holiday
3 out of 5 stars
Reviewed on 16 Aug 2013 by Nigel Kieser
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The hike to the ridge to see the shepherds.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Stay for as long as possible at Zalanpatak, which is the most remote location but has the best food and the most helpful staff. Miklosvar is also a good location but one got the feeling that the staff were not really that "interested". Horse riding is only possible for older / experienced riders.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Conversations with our guide certainly improved our awareness of some of the conservation issues. But I'm not sure how much the presence of the lodge actually benefited the people in Zalanpatak.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Very good.
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
We preserve values still largely unaffected by modern consumer society. Our region has remained under the spell of a centuries old harmony between the human community and nature itself. We are convinced that this is not merely one last remnant of a long forgotten world, but rather a sustainable model for a viable future. We focus on inherited values which we combine with the amenities of modern bathrooms and ecological heating systems. Solar power heats the water used in the kitchen. Human aspects and the respect of nature are always put in front of everything else. All accommodations have been caringly restored and furnished with authentic antiques and textiles from the region. Our philosophy of restoring is characterised by utter respect for the textures and atmospheres of ancient buildings. The way we restore derelict houses is barely noticeable, rather would it seem that the buildings have aged gently and gradually without recent renovation.
We try to source and produce locally as much food as possible for our guests. Every location has its own vegetable garden and orchard. We breed the rare ‘Black Transylvanian Bare Necked’ chicken for eggs and meat. Milk, yoghurt and cheeses come from the village’s cows and sheep, and the honey from local bee-hives. All jams and preserves are prepared in our kitchens. Trout is raised locally. The three-course meals with wine are prepared as of old by the cooks who have been passing down the recipes for generations. We also cater for vegetarians or special dietary requests.

The entire staff are as local as ourselves (the host’s family has been documented here since 1252 AD), as we believe it would make little sense to import expatriates into the ancient communities our very aim is to preserve. We therefore might be a little less professional, yet perhaps all the more passionate about what we do.Our Transylvanian walking & nature holiday provides employment for 6 families. Meals are prepared on site by local staff. Most of the food we serve is traditionally produced in the village and its surroundings. All our employees are local. We purchase most goods locally, even traditional building materials like handmade tiles, bricks and lime. Taxes are paid locally.
Our taxes help the local council to develop the village. Profit generated is re-invested directly in the restoration of our cultural heritage. Thus the entire village largely benefits from our undertaking.
We aim at restoring and preserving the historic architectural harmony of our village and its environment. The guest houses are part of the village and our guests become neighbours to the villagers for the length of their stay. We show our guests nature still in its unspoiled way. We monitor wildlife around the village and make the villagers understand why it is so important to preserve it. We promote sustainable tourism also by limiting the amount of rooms available.
