“Two weeks of easy birding, in friendly Caribbean style,” reads the blurb of our
Trinidad and Tobago birding holiday – to which we say, yes, please! Expect hummingbirds on the feeders in a dedicated hummingbird garden, birding from the guest house with a tropical rainforest behind it and scarlet ibis flying overhead – very easy to spot.
The Caribbean in general is good for North and South American migrants, great weather, and lots of species over a small area. “You have a tour leader who doesn’t just know about birds but about the local culture and history – a good way to combine nature, history, culture, local traditions,” says Yuri about Cuba.
Heading to an
ecolodge with optional birding walks, like David’s in the Gambia, is a good way to start. Our
Sri Lanka ecolodge has nature walks in the forest around its grounds with a guide, as well as the options for safaris in nearby Yala National Park.
Head to
Romania or
Rwanda and Uganda to combine large wildlife with birds – bears and wolves in Romania, gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda – Uganda has 1,000 species of birds and our holidays have seen people convert from wildlife generalists to birders.
If you’re based in Europe already, consider short haul European bird watching destinations to dip your toe without going to great lengths: the
Scottish Hebrides, the
Danube Delta, seabirds in northern Europe, or
eastern Andalusia and
Extremadura in Spain.
