Memorable parts? Elephants crossing the river just ahead of us. Tips? More accurate pre-departure information needed on the correct clothing and footwear for work on the project. We had to buy everything on arrival at the project as the pre-departure information was quite inadequate. Local benefits? YES Overall rating? 10/10. This was a phenomenal experience, not least due to the professionalism, experience and commitment of the APE project staff on the ground. We... (more)Vandna Kalia

Memorable parts? Every second was amazing. No part was less memorable that another. Not exactly a holiday. You are there to work and provide enrichment and stimulus to the Orang Utangs and Sun Bears. Tips? Take plenty of mosquito repellent ! Plenty to spare wellington boots at the Lodge. Be prepared for cold showers. Local benefits? Yes. That is the purpose of the project - especially as far as the animals are concerned. Overall rating? Ten out of Ten. Great group... It was a highlight to see the orang utan Ganti and her baby come in from the forest - and the sunbears are truly awesome! But really it was the whole experience that I'll remember. (more)Kim Jordan

Memorable parts? Being in a group of mostly 20-somethings was a wee window into their world! Handling the monkeys was pretty extraordinary! Tips? Just be prepared to get dirty and for quite physical work. Local benefits? Yes we were directly looking after animals. Overall rating? It was a very interesting experience and we both learned a lot. But I think my 'roughing it' days are over; I was really glad to get to a nice, clean hotel at the end! (more)Mela Greenslade

Memorable parts? There were many. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience. Being surrounded by other volunteers committed to improving the world condition was inspiring. The work was challenging but it was obvious that the volunteers were necessary and helped to improve the animals daily life. Tips? Make sure you are comfortable with what is very similar to a “camping” experience. You will be wet a lot of the time so I recommend men’s bathing shorts for both men and women... (more)Martha Younger
