Responsible tourism: Romania holiday, Discover Romania

Environment

We are committed to playing our part through caring for the places and communities that we visit. We will continue to work with our suppliers to deliver a responsible product and quality performance

We are helping to minimise the effects of emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases on the global climate from the transport that we use (aircraft, buses and cars). This contribution will be invested, for example, in renewable energy schemes in less developed countries. We will continue to do this until governments bring in alternative ways in which to address the climate change impact of transport. Currently this is done through The Travel Foundation– a British based charity that is implementing tourism projects and practice around the world to deliver long term caring.

Community

We will contribute also 5 euros per customer to a community project in Romania. Our customers are asked to make suggestions, based on what they see in Romania, about suitable projects to support.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

So many, but probably amongst the highest the beautiful panoramic views of rolling hills and valleys in Maramures, staying with local people, marvelling at the painted monasteries, and visiting the Brown bear sanctuary.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be aware of the high temperatures in August, eg. 32 C and the gravel and potholey roads in the more remote areas.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

In some cases. Particularly the families who opened their homes for Bed and breakfast. Some local crafts at sites of high tourists attractions, and entrance fee to the Bear sanctuary helped to support their work.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. Our tour operator, Laura Vesa, did a wonderful job in designing a trip that suited our needs and interests. She was in regular contact with our guide keeping tabs on our progress and well being. Our guide was superb. A mine of information, adding extras items he thought we'd like, and was great company too.

Good. Romanians are very friendly and the countryside is lovely. 4.5 stars awarded.

Comments appreciated - in future we will give much clearer indication of possible need for warm clothing in May and we hope that our travellers will encourage others to visit Romania. It was a real pleasure to show them the country.

For me the painted monastery - Voronet and the Saxon fortified church - Prejmer

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There were 3 distinct parts to the holiday - first the Saxon Villages & Churches in Transylvania (staying in Viscri was a highlight), then to beautiful Maramures with the wooden Churches (Popica Farm was another memorable place to stay) & finally to Bucovina with its stunning painted monasteries.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Thoroughly to be recommended. It was ideal to be driven round by a delightful, English speaking, knowledgeable & intelligent Romanian guide. We greatly enjoyed staying in the guesthouses & meeting local people.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent.
