Description of Romania holiday, Discover Romania
On this holiday to Romania, the villages out-shout the cities. A knowledgeable local guide will take you to places like Viscri, which was rescued by the Mihai Eminescu Trust, an NGO busy restoring rare Saxon villages hand-in-hand with the community that lives in them. Your visit will support small-scale farmers, B&B bakeries and house weavers, all while helping to preserve villagers’ medieval houses and fortified-to-the nines churches. You’ll also find painted monasteries in the countryside – known for Byzantine wraparound murals.
Brasov and Bucharest offer a different view of Romania. But Sighisoara is the real surprise – it’s one of the best preserved citadels in Europe and a lived-in medieval city.
Fancy spending an extra day or two in the countryside or exploring Brasov and its vampiric castle? This holiday to Romania is tailor made, so you can take the itinerary with a pinch of salt. The holiday company will be happy to tweak the trip to your likes, while lending you their expertise on what – and what not – to do.

It is hard to pick out one particular highlight. The whole experience was amazing. Much of the scenery is pristine. The rural areas are a step back in time. Our hosts were unbelievably welcoming, even if we did not share a common language....we had milk fresh from the cow and food fresh from the garden. We even hand milked a cow. The wooden churches and painted monasteries are beautiful. Read full reviewReviewed on 12 Jun 2019 by Sheena Boddington
Three things stand out : the beauty of the countryside and the fascinating towns ,villages and churches; our wonderful guide, Ben; and meeting local people. Read full reviewReviewed on 21 Sep 2018 by Jill Meighan
We particularly enjoyed walking in Piatra Craiului National Park; visiting the painted monasteries and attending a free concert given by Brasov Opera. Travelling on the sleeper train to Bucharest was an experience! Read full reviewReviewed on 28 Jul 2018 by Jo Heaton
We went for the castles and culture, but it's the people that made our trip, especially our amazing guide Ben. We also loved the accommodation choices - the library in Richis was a highlight. Read full reviewReviewed on 06 Jan 2018 by Danyalle Brinsmead
Staying at casa Ana and experiencing a traditional Christmas was amazing. Siebel was snow covered and delightful and the walk up to the monastery on Christmas Day through the forest was wonderful. Read full reviewReviewed on 31 Oct 2018 by Hamish Prince
Most memorable was meeting the 96 year old local Lutheran guide in the fortified church and then the meal in the village...We came not knowing what to expect but a rich history and culture set in great natural beauty was revealed to us. Read full reviewReviewed on 18 Aug 2017 by Lindsey Tester
So many wonderful memories, but probably amongst the highest the beautiful panoramic views of rolling hills and valleys in Maramures, staying with local people, marvelling at the painted monasteries, and visiting the Brown bear sanctuary. Read full reviewReviewed on 28 May 2017 by Peter Campion
