Planet

CARBON REDUCTION
Volunteer accommodation in Split uses solar energy for electricity, helping reduce dependence on fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Volunteers travel to the centre using public transportation or walk whenever possible, significantly reducing the carbon footprint compared to private vehicles. Orientation provides practical training on eco-friendly habits, including conserving electricity and water, reducing plastic waste, and buying local products to cut down transport emissions. Volunteers are encouraged to adopt sustainable living practices throughout their stay, ensuring that their efforts to support people with disabilities are paired with responsible environmental actions. Together, these choices contribute to Croatia’s wider sustainability goals and help preserve the clean, natural beauty of the Dalmatian coast.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
Although primarily focused on social support, this project indirectly supports environmental sustainability through eco-friendly living and waste reduction. Accommodation uses recycled furnishings, sustainable materials, and locally sourced food to reduce transport emissions and packaging waste. Volunteers learn about sustainability and share knowledge with others, helping spread environmental awareness in the community. While not directly involved in wildlife protection, the project’s sustainable practices help protect Split’s coastal ecosystem and contribute to sustainable tourism in Croatia. Volunteers’ conscious choices ensure that their time in Split benefits both the people they support and the environment around them, preserving local biodiversity and natural resources for future generations.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY, EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY
Volunteers stay in locally owned accommodation and support small businesses, helping to keep tourism income within Split’s economy and promoting sustainable community development. The disability support project is entirely run by Croatian professionals who organise activities, manage daily care routines, and facilitate volunteer placements, providing essential jobs and stability in the local workforce. Volunteers work closely with staff and clients, learning about Croatian culture, social customs, and the language, building mutual respect and deep cultural connections. Through their support, volunteers help adults with disabilities gain skills for more independent living, build social confidence, and enjoy a greater sense of belonging within their community. The project fosters inclusivity, offering clients valuable opportunities for learning, creativity, and social engagement that might otherwise be inaccessible. Volunteers help break down barriers and reduce stigma associated with disabilities, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and positive change. All benefits remain local, ensuring sustainable tourism that uplifts Split’s community while transforming lives for people with disabilities and volunteers alike.
